Fistfull Of Nothing
Royal Blood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White knuckle grip, and anxious heart
Can't give a dime afraid to come up short
What is feared, will overtake
Nothing sown, nothing left to reap

The world that surrounds
Is a telling mirror
Showing what beats inside
What beats inside your chest
The cycle continues on
This dead end street

If we are not the solution
Then we have a problem
And soon all we have left
is a fistfull of nothing

We find ourselves empty handed
The harder we grasp the more we lose
Who do you trust
And who lives in you

We find ourselves empty handed
The harder we grasp the more we lose
We find ourselves empty handed
The harder we grasp the more we lose

Making the choice, No one to blame
Afraid to lose means you have nothing left to gain
When you crown selfishness as your king
The end will find you with a fistfull of nothing

The world that surrounds
Is a telling mirror
Showing what beats inside
What beats inside of your chest
The life we lead shows what is inside of our heads

Step up soon or you will be
Left with a fistfull of nothing!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Royal Blood's "Fistfull Of Nothing" explore the theme of fear and its consequences. The opening lines paint a picture of a person who is tightly gripping onto something, too anxious to let go, for fear of losing it all. There is an underlying fear that what is feared will eventually overtake, leaving you with nothing to show. The world is presented as a mirror reflecting what's inside a person. The lyrics suggest that one's fear is the root of their emptiness, hence being left with "nothing".

The song suggests that if we're not part of the solution, we're part of the problem. It implies that the fear of losing everything, and the obsession of grasping onto anything we can, can lead us to become selfish and lose sight of what truly matters. The end result is summarized in the line, "The harder we grasp the more we lose."

In the last verse, the lyrics suggest that it's our choice whether we leave this world empty-handed or with fulfilment. It depends on what we crown as our king; selfishness will leave us with a "fistful of nothing," while acting selflessly will bring genuine happiness.

@Howard White good choice along with the same movie that goes along with it hand-in-hand, the new one armed swordsman. The English dub characters are the same, similar attitudes and storyline....

Where ti lung plays a very principled character that goes beyond throwing rational caution to the wind, a victim of solipsism where he thinks teacher lung the hero is a reasonable man obviously, and simply hasn't been informed of the real truth.

All the while, honorably walking into a deep trap with virtually no escape other than might is right and a den of vipers that one way or another, have either compromise the truth or are complete frauds, utilizing the fact that honor is the lone standing principle and therefore, it's easy to win if you step to the dark side.

And on top of it, teacher lung has a secret move, a gimmick trick where after defeating ti lung with it, he says in his dry but brutally frank and honest way....what else is Feng or ti lung in both these movies but brutally honest and principled:

"....so thats how its done"

....yes, it's defeated everyone and now you as well.

"....if i had 3 swords....thhhhen ..i could foil it"

(Foil it, very fitting, suggesting without a doubt, its a dastardly move, but never the less, to become victim of it, still means honorably that you are the ill equipped or sucker....for a KNIGHT or HERO is one who represents a ANSWER...a recourse for others who are victimized, Feng isn't accusing teacher lung of anything more than what he and his gimmick move is, everything has a solution for a hero, all he needs is 3 swords which makes as much sense unbeknownst and ironically to lung himself)

Lolol....but do you not only have but 2 arms?

...teacher lung is obtuse to the fact that is secret move is a gimmick that nobody can see coming, it's rather deceptive and therefore dishonorable in principle, but at the same time, it's fair because buyer beware, if feng says ohh so thats how its done, what he is saying is encapsulating what now explains such a perfect fight and title record where of course he has been a winning scoundrel this whole time, a true knight being truly honorable, ... should have at least put him into question or in fengs case, shouldn't be surprised as to what is in fact the now explainable truth.

Where teacher lung ultimately goes wrong is not realizing a man with one arm is more apt to be able to conjure up 3 swords that lung blindly cannot conceive and therefore, three swords or not, he is at the same time logically expedient or in other words, rightfully and rationally never going to conceive or fall victim to what is in effect, seeing boogie men.

He has the ultimate gimmick move and even he knows, it takes three swords conceivably to counter it and let's be real, everybody he fights clearly has but two arms and therefore 2 swords.... LET'S NOT BE STUPID and fear what obviously can be seen.

Those are about the only differences between the two movies but other than that that, characters are basically the same in a sense.

Two guys with two different stories and through the twists and turns of life, both cross paths with a revelation and realization that they are both one in the same, both victims of circumstances and what was ultimately a bad introduction, later becomes ....brothers in the truest romantical sense of Brothers in arms and everything for the love of brother...

To die for one another is as lei lee says:

"...uh w... well 😡 I'LL BE ONLY TOO HAPPY TO JOIN HIMMMM"

in other words, teacher lung isnt winning the psych battle by reminding Li, that your "brother" with two arms and in his prime couldnt beat me....your demise is soon at hand.

Teacher lung was right, I do not believe lei li redwood ultimately was his counter-move of 3 swords until the situation happened to present itself.

Lei li went into it with shear vengeance for the death of his brother.

That movie just like this one, has it's very visually striking and impressionable key scenes.... Like the last time lei li saw feng, feng gets on his horse and reassures he will be back and lei li is not so sure of that and that's where he too has to be careful of boogie men because you would think he would be very adamant and telling feng HEY WAIT A MINUTE, YOU DON'T WANT TO FIGHT HIM BECAUSE HE HAS A GIMMICK MOVE THAT YOU AND EVERYBODY ELSE INCLUDING MYSELF has fallen victim to.

He mentions it once and that eerie music in the background starts to play... Its fourth dimension nuclear shit, because let's face it, li even retired with one arm can toss three eggs in the air and time it to crack them each individually one by one...

It's high-level Jedi, these are the best of the best....lei li even though young had a big reputation.... Fallen from Grace and relegated to the lowest rung of Chinese culture....a waiter.

I don't care what anybody says because I've seen it, out with some demure Chinese girl, a quiet sit-down over some dishes at a Chinese restaurant, ever so feminine and delicate, to not even make too much eye contact with me but still a noticeable and approving slight smile....

If I told her I appreciate a woman who shuts the fk up most of the time and when a man's voice goes up hers goes down, and as long as I was interested in her and only her, she would not have to challenge yourself one bit to find agreement in what I have just said but in more careful and select words of course...

Everyone makes the mistake in thinking that the average Chinese girl is submissive lolol...

They are just respectful and mindful and practical.... Ain't nothing in there about submissive. You are asking something of them as a man and they we'll give it if it truly is indicative of a man and therefore she expects nothing more than what is expected from a man. Go out with your friends after work? Is that what you think marriage is about.... Will be her reply that comes out of her mouth and in other words, probably with a slight chuckle, you have a home and responsibility to come back to ...end of story, and very practical.

Because all of a sudden, she turns her head toward the waiter across the room and with a tolerated laborious expression, she looks at the waiter and curls her finger as in come here.... Why do I have to go out of my way and ask.... That's why you waiters are so annoying....

That's what it was all demonstrative of from my point of view and solidified when she told the waiter what it was she wanted done.

It wasn't nasty drill sergeant stuff it was just all of the sudden the demure submissive slight smile, turned into something of a Stern poker face.

That is the point of li falling from Grace and being relegated to barely a qualified waiter with one arm of all things...

In any of these kung fu movies you'll notice the waiter is always abused as a given one way or another.

Also why, there is no tipping either.

Lei li???!!.... YOU'RE LEI LI????!!!

.... But nevertheless, feng rides off and is reminded beware of that counter move and that's what makes the movie real good, because it's all objective no different than the force, it's all simple procedure, but at the speed of light, because what is a Jedi but someone who can think out moves in advance before he has to arrive there.

... Beat your man to the punch the old expression goes...or in boxing the most punishing hit is the one he does not see coming....

And just before feng turns the corner, he stops and turns around and....

If you watch this movie or if anybody has I know they know what I'm talking about...

It is a brilliant piece of Cinema art, very well-designed and intended....the effect is impressionable and I've never forgotten it...

Watched this yesterday on my phone via Amazon Prine for the first time in maybe 35-40 years, since seeing it on Channel 5 in NYC.

1) GotDAMN this flick was good!

2) Didn't remember this flick being so action packed and fuckin' bloody as all hell. Larry Bensky must have had a one hell of a time trying to edit this for TV.

3) The Rover. Nuff said. I wish I had that riff playing anytime I walked in a room. 🤣

I'm pulling out my projector and 100" screen today and watching this again. This deserves as true a cinematic atmosphere as possible.

I remember watching this as a kid in the 80s and it was the first time I saw a movie where the heroes died. And almost 40 years later, I'm searching for it on YouTube to give you an idea about how much that stuck with me.

This applies to me also. This movie is in my top 5 all time kung fu moveis

Great Martial Arts flick when Kung Fu movies were just taking hold in America...but who can forget the touching
love story of Butterfly also...he almost got her out of there, but she sacrificed herself to give him a better chance.

You'll Like It Too

One of the best martial arts films ever made <3

Nate Dogg

I have loved this movie since I was a teen!!!

This was the second Karate movie I saw in my life, that was 45 years ago, I do now recognize time is passing very fast.

That scene at 33:00 and tells dude what's he's going to do and tears that sign off the wall, 30 years later, still leaves a big impression on me.

If you like this movie, then by default, you will like the return of the new one armed swordsman....triple irons.

Or if you want the same story line, but with the venom's, watch the spear man of death...
...flag of iron.

@Zakato Retro i wouldn't know what truly is uncut, but I know I wouldn't watch versions that are missing scenes or changed background music compared to my 80's vhs version copies.

No, I would not watch the letter box version either. I like the skewed for tv view.

Zakato Retro

Hello,.and you’ll never watch the duel uncut,right?
