Mountains At Midnight
Royal Blood Lyrics

In your dancing shoes
I'm a ticking timebomb hooligan
Come to light your fuse
Twenty-four karat thug
In a velvet glove
Pining for pretty potions
Down those holes you dug
Bouncing off of the walls
Of mountains at midnight
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
Another rosy rouse
Another shiver from my spine
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
I'm the hidden draw
Of what you were before
A splice then play back reels
From the cutting room floor
And nothing gets me close
To how I wanna feel
Try to suck it up
But I still got no fear
Bouncing off of the walls
Of mountains at midnight
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
Another rosy rouse
Another shiver from my spine
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
Bouncing off of the walls
Of mountains at midnight
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
Another rosy rouse
Another shiver from my spine
Crawling out of my bones
'Til the break of the daylight
The lyrics of Royal Blood's song "Mountains At Midnight" paint a vivid picture of a complex and intense emotional journey. The opening stanza sets the tone with vivid imagery of being a bruise that needs soothing, a ticking timebomb hooligan ready to ignite, and a twenty-four karat thug yearning for something more. This character seems to be searching for solace and escape in the midst of chaos and turmoil, portrayed through the metaphor of dancing shoes and pretty potions in the holes dug deep within.
The chorus brings a sense of relentless energy and restlessness, with the singer bouncing off the walls of mountains at midnight, struggling to break free from the confines of their own being until the dawn breaks. The repetition of crawling out of their bones emphasizes a desperate need for release, a yearning for freedom or enlightenment that seems just out of reach. The mention of another rosy rouse and shiver down the spine hints at both excitement and trepidation in this journey of self-discovery.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's struggle with their past self and the desire to achieve a certain emotional state that seems elusive. The reference to a hidden draw of what they were before suggests a complex relationship with the past, perhaps a yearning for nostalgia or a struggle to reconcile old identities with new desires. The urgency to feel a certain way, despite attempts to suppress fear, speaks to the internal conflict and drive for authenticity that drives the character forward.
The final repetition of the chorus brings the song full circle, with the singer once again bouncing off the walls of mountains at midnight, yearning to break free from their own constraints until the day finally dawns. The unresolved tension in the lyrics leaves the listener with a sense of anticipation and yearning for resolution, mirroring the singer's own internal struggle and quest for release. Overall, "Mountains At Midnight" captures the raw and tumultuous journey of self-discovery, inner conflict, and the relentless pursuit of personal freedom and emotional truth.

I'm a bruise you soothe
I am the pain that you comfort and heal
In your dancing shoes
As you move and groove through life
I'm a ticking timebomb hooligan
I am a dangerous troublemaker ready to explode
Come to light your fuse
Here to ignite your passions and desires
Twenty-four karat thug
A perfect criminal, secretly soft-hearted
In a velvet glove
Concealed in a smooth and gentle exterior
Pining for pretty potions
Longing for beautiful but unattainable things
Down those holes you dug
Through the troubles and challenges you have faced
I'm the hidden draw
I am the mysterious attraction
Of what you were before
Of the person you used to be
A splice then play back reels
Cut and replay memories from the past
From the cutting room floor
From the discarded and forgotten moments
And nothing gets me close
Nothing brings me near to my desired happiness
To how I wanna feel
To the emotions I crave
Try to suck it up
Attempting to endure and cope
But I still got no fear
Yet, I am unafraid and brave
