Braff was a wonderfully characterful and melodic player with an immediately identifiable sound and unique tone on the cornet, an uncommon instrument in post-war jazz. He style was fundamentally based on that of earlier players including Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett and Bunny Berigan but he transcended these influences to always sounds fresh, sparky and somehow modern.
He was born in Boston and began playing in local clubs in the 1940s. In 1949, he was hired to play with the Edmond Hall Orchestra. He relocated to New York in 1953 where he was much in demand for band dates and recordings.
He died February 10, 2003, in Chatham, Massachusetts.
"Sure, they’ve made statements about my supposedly combining a modern approach with a feeling for traditional forms. Well, people say all sorts of things, because they want to categorise and label. I’ve only ever had two labels. Either it’s good or it stinks." - Ruby Braff speaking in 1968
Lover Come Back To Me

I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
The lyrics to Ruby Braff's song "Lover Come Back To Me" depict the pain and longing felt by a person after a failed relationship. The song starts with the confession that the singer let their lover go, but they still can't forget about them. They reminisce about the day they met - when the sky was blue, the moon was new, and their heart was singing with love. However, now that their lover is gone, they walk lonely roads and struggle to find comfort even in their memories of their past together.
The chorus repeats the refrain of "Lover come back to me," emphasizing the strong desire for their lover to return. The second verse goes on to describe how even the stars feel distant and the night feels cold without their lover's presence. The singer's heart is aching with loneliness and is constantly singing out for their lover's return. They acknowledge that love is old, but its enduring power still lingers on in their heart.
Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the heartbreak and longing that can come after a heart-wrenching breakup. The lyrics are simple yet effective in conveying the emotions that the singer is going through.
