My Song
Rudy Valee And His Connecticut Yankees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Verse:
All my pretty speeches are a bust
And so I must try something new.
I've been sitting up the whole night long
Writing a song all about you.
I don't care if it's a big success;
As long as it will change your 'no' to 'yes'.
Chorus:
My song won't appeal to a lover of art.
My song will reveal what I feel in my heart.
It won't have so much of Franz Schubert's touch.
And I can't begin like Irving Berlin.

My song, though a poet would never OK,
My song, still you know what I'm striving to say.

My words may be crude; the tune may be wrong,
But you'll find my heart in my song.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Rudy Valee And His Connecticut Yankees's song My Song revolve around the idea of taking a different approach when trying to win over the heart of the person they love. The first verse suggests that the singer has had no success with their previous attempts at wooing, and thus must resort to writing a song about their love interest in the hope that it will change the person's opinion of them. The verse also implies that the singer is not concerned about the song becoming a big hit, as long as it achieves its main objective, which is to win over the person they love.

The chorus reveals the singer's doubts about their song becoming popular to wide audiences. He acknowledges that his song won't appeal to everyone and will lack the refinement associated with more professional songwriters. However, despite the song's flaws, the singer believes that it encapsulates his true feelings for the person he loves. He acknowledges that his lyrics may appear crude, and the melody may not be perfect, but he hopes that the person he loves will listen beyond the superficial components of the song and value its emotional significance.

My, how simple beautiful...they don't make tunes and lyrics like this anymore!

@Bigband78

I had to listen to this to recall it.I have a Rudy Vallee torch song list and this is not one of his best.His early torch songs from 1929-30 are best.

@pixibobcat

Even though many of his earlier songs might be technically better, this one comes out special because of the exhilarating tune and heartwarming lyrics! (More important than mere technique!)

My, how beautiful...They just don't make music like this anymore!

@pixibobcat

While this song may not be the best of Rudy's offerings, (and it is also a little scratchy), I just love the tune and the heartwarming lyrics! It's a winner in my opinion...because a good tune and good lyrics are truly important for a record's success!

Listened to the song you referred me to, but it didn't seem as good as "My Song." There's only one year between the songs, and his voice couldn't have deteriorated that much! (Took me a while to realize that "puddytat" referred to my baby bobcat icon!)
