Sweet song singin' take me back (I wanna go)
Sweet song singin' take me back (I wanna go)
Sweet song singin' take me back (I wanna go)
Here's to, to a long forgotten dream (sweet song singin' take me back)
Enshrouded by, by a history so clean
In a place still the same, so rich with time
So clear is the mystery to me
So majestic, yet electric, dose of age I see
There remains a sparkle in the sand
Can't restrain these feelings of my ancient land
Here is a melody for you
Sky of white and nylon blue
Let me hurry home to you
To sing, to dance, to laugh
Embrace
(Ohh, ohh-ohh)
So vague is this picture I am seeing (sweet song singin' take me back)
Yet so clear, and so dear my soul is singin'
To belong is this feelin' I am missin'
To embrace this memory I been kissin' (sweet song singin' take me back)
So clear is this mystery to me
So majestic, yet electric, guest of age I see
There remains a sparkle in the sand
Can't restrain these feelings of my ancient land
Here is a melody for you
Sky of white and nylon blue
Let me hurry home to you
To sing, to dance, to laugh
Embrace
I wanna go (sweet song singin' take me back)
Wanna go (sweet song singin' take me back)
Go, ohh-oh (sweet song singin' take me back)
Go, yeah (sweet song singin' take me back)
Wanna go, uh (sweet song singin' take me back)
Wanna go, ohh (sweet song singin' take me back)
Take me on back, yeah (sweet song singin' take me back)
Ooh-ooh, hee-ooh, hee-ohh, ooh (sweet song singin' take me back)
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, (sweet song singin' take me back)
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh (sweet song singin' take me back)
(Sweet song singin' take me back)
(Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh) (sweet song singin' take me back)
(sweet song singin' take me back)
The lyrics of Rufus's "Egyptian Song" represent the singer's strong emotional connection to Egypt, a "long forgotten dream" enshrouded by a "history so clean." The singer's soul is singing with clarity, beauty and majesty as she longs to return to the land that remains "rich with time." The song revels in the mysterious and ancient nature of Egypt, symbolized by the "sparkle in the sand" that the singer cannot help but feel emotionally bound to. The chorus of the song repeats "sweet song singing take me back" to reinforce the longing of the singer to return to this place.
The second verse of the song adds to the complexity of the singer's emotions. Although the memory of the land is vague and shrouded in mystery, it is also clear and dear to her soul. The feeling of belonging to this ancient land is what she is missing most, and she seeks to embrace this memory that she has been kissing. The singer is overwhelmed by the majesty and sparking beauty of Egypt and cannot restrain the feelings of connection she has to this land. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus with the addition of "I wanna go" before "sweet song singing take me back."
