The band signed a record deal with Profile Records in 1983, and Run's older brother, Russell "Rush" Simmons, signed Run-D.M.C. to his newly formed management company Rush Productions that same year. On their first major United States tour, the group set new fads by performing dressed in baggy black clothing, Adidas Sneakers (always with shoelaces removed), and Fedora hats.
Their mainstream success continued as the group performed at the famous Live Aid concert in 1985, and their 1986 album ''Raising Hell'' became the highest-selling rap album in history (this record was later broken as rap gained more popularity with artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Eminem), reaching number 3 on the ''Billboard magazine'' album charts and selling over 3 million copies. The album featured the famous cover version of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", a rap-rock collaboration performed with Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. The song was the first hip-hop track to make the Top 10 on Billboard's singles charts.
Run-D.M.C. were renowned for breaking new ground in rap music. "It's Like That" and "Sucker MC's" (1983) were the first hip hop tracks that relied on electronic beats and nothing else. "Peter Piper" (1986) was the first rap record in which the DJ cut up a record (in this case, "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" by jazz musician Bob James. Run-D.M.C. became the first rap act with a platinum album and multi-platinum album, as well as the first rappers to appear on the cover of ''Rolling Stone'' magazine, to receive a Grammy nomination and to appear on Saturday Night Live] and American Bandstand.
After a period of lackluster commercial success after the ''Raising Hell'' album, the group made a comeback in 1993 with their album ''Down With the King'', which made Billboard's Top 10 for album and the Pete Rock assisted single "Down With the King".
Jam-Master Jay was shot and killed in October 2002, leading Run-D.M.C. to announce their retirement.

You Talk Too Much

You talk too much
You talk too much
You talk too much
You talk too much
Hey you over there, I know about your kind
Everywhere that you go, no matter where you are at
I said you talk about this, and you talk about that
When the cat took your tongue, I say you took it right back
Your mouth is so big, one bite could kill a Big Mac
You talk too much
You never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
You talk about people, you don't even know
And you talk about places, you never go
You talk about your girl, from head to toe
I said your mouth's moving fast, and your brain's moving slow
You talk too much
You never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
You're the instigator, the orator of the town
You're the worst when you converse, just a big mouth clown
You talk when you're awake, I heard you talk when you sleep
Has anyone ever told you, that talk is cheap
You talk too much
You never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
Talking is the one thing, that you can do best
You told the cavity creeps, to watch out for Crest
You never have the story, right and exact
And then you always try to bore me, with your yakkity yak
You talk too much
And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
Everyday you are out fighting someone in the street
And you're always fighting someone you know ya can't beat
Then you wonder how, you got in this mess
Just think of what you said, then take a guess
You talk too much
You never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
You're always spreading rumors, whether bad or good
You're the damn Walter Cronkite of the neighborhood
The Barbara Walters, and the Howard Cosell
You always come around, with a story to tell
You talk too much
And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
I said it's everybody's business that you love to mind
And talkin' to you, is like dropping a dime
You're spreading the word, like it is your job
You should be a stool pigeon, who works for the mob
You talk too much
Then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
A big blabbermouth, that's what you are
If you were a talk show host, you'd be a star
I said your mouth is big, size extra large
And when you open it, it's like my garage
You talk too much
And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
You always like to gossip, just like a girl
You talk so damn much, it's outta this world
When you're reincarnated, in your second life
You won't be a man, you'll be a nagging wife
You talk too much
Then you never shut up
He said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
Shut up
Shut up
Twenty-five hours, eight days a week
Thirteen months outta year, is when you speak
I'm tired of listening to the garbage you talk
Why don't you find a short pier, and take a long walk?
You talk too much
Then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
You talk too much
You should be, out of breath
You talk too much
Man you naggin' me to death
You talk too much
Tired of hearing you speak
You talk too much
Eight days a week
You talk too much
Then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Why don't you ever shut up?
You talk too much
Then you never shut up
I said you talk too much
Homeboy you never shut up
The lyrics of Run-D.M.C.'s song "You Talk Too Much" speak about a person who talks incessantly and spreads rumors about people and places they don't even know. The singer is irritated by this person's tendency to talk too much and not listen to others. The song uses humorous comparisons to illustrate the point and is structured in the form of a call and response between the singer and a group of backing vocalists.
The first verse introduces the person the song is directed towards and compares them to a news channel that "talks about this and talks about that." The second verse talks about how this person doesn't listen to anyone and only talks about themselves and things they don't know about. The third verse calls out the person for always spreading rumors and talking about things that don't concern them, like they're a journalist for the neighborhood.
Throughout the song, the singer emphasizes how the person's constant talking gets in the way of conversation and how it aggravates everyone around them. The chorus emphasizes this point, with the singer telling the person that they "talk too much" and urging them to "shut up."
Overall, the song is a lighthearted take on the annoyance of having to deal with someone who talks too much, and is a nod to the everyday struggles of communication.
