Walk This Way
Run DMC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now there's a backseat, lover
That's always undercover
And I talk 'til my daddy say
Said, "you ain't seen, nothin'
'Til you're down on the muffin
And there's sure to be a change in ways"
Now there's a cheerleader
That's a real big pleaser
As far as I can reminisce
And the best thing of loving
Was her sister and her cousin
And it started with a little kiss, like this

See-saw swingin'
With the boys in school
And her feet was flyin' up in the air
Singin', "Hey diddle diddle with a kitty in the middle"
And they swingin' like it just don't care
So I took a big chance
At the high school dance
With a lady who was ready to play
It wasn't me she was foolin'
'Cause she knew what was she was doin'
When she told me how to walk this way

She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
Walk this way!
Talk this way!

She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
Walk this way!
Talk this way!

Well, just gimme a kiss!
Ooh, a-like this!

School girl sleazy
With a classy kind of sassy
Little skirt hangin' way up her knee
There were three young ladies
In the school gym locker
And they find they were lookin' at D
I was high school loser
Never made it with a lady
'Til the boys told me somethin' I missed
That my next door neighbor
Had a daughter, had a favor
And I gave the girl a little kiss, like this

See-saw swingin'
With the boys in school
With your feet was flyin' up in the air
Singin', "Hey diddle diddle with a kitty in the middle"
I was swingin' like I didn't care
So I took a big chance
At the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
It wasn't me she was foolin'
When she knew what was she was doin'
When she told me how to walk this way

She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
Walk this way!
Talk this way!

She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
Walk this way!
Talk this way!

The lyrics to "Walk This Way" by Run DMC start off with a description of a hidden lover who is always undercover. The singer then suggests that the listener hasn't experienced anything yet until they've "been down on the muffin", which is a suggestive reference to oral sex. The singer then describes a cheerleader who is "a real big pleaser" and reminisces about the joys of loving her sister and cousin. The lyrics move on to talk about a high school dance where the singer takes a chance on a girl who is ready to play. The girl teaches him how to walk and talk in a certain way, which the singer repeats throughout the song.

Overall, the lyrics of "Walk This Way" are about teenage desire and rebellion. The song takes a rebellious tone by using suggestive language and themes of sexuality to express the wildness and excitement of youth. The reference to the popular and classic nursery rhyme, "Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle" adds a playful quality to the song. The metaphor in this video is epic. Rock and Hip-hop/Rap breaking the barrier that separates them!

@poloauz3446

I never realized that

@quasidiem99

The barrier has always been imaginary because everyone I knew in the 80s liked RUN DMC and Aerosmith, even before this song came out.

@noirfiddle7284

Much like Hip Hop was thirty years ago. Rock was invented by blacks and was  criticized as not being "real" music.  This was a legendary moment in music  history. It reignited Aerosmith's career.
