The first stanza of the song, "with the sunrise brings the day and light, but I am the sunset," sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is feeling defeated and hopeless, like the end of the day, while the rest of the world is moving forward. They express their desire to start anew, but they can't seem to find the energy to do so, which is shown in the line, "it's time I awake to a brand new day, I won't move to lay again." The following lines talk about a person catching their eye, one who seems to be everything they're not. The singer is self-conscious, and they believe that they are not as put together as the other person. They don't want to admit their feelings, and instead, they'd prefer to watch from afar, "my words will only make you dream."
The following lines are perhaps the most metaphorical of the song. The singer uses the imagery of drowning to describe how they're feeling: "your friends, they up and ate me, through titanic tummies I'm swimming, o my friends on quick-sinking sand: quench your thirst with such demand." They feel overwhelmed and lost, almost as if they're being consumed by their surroundings. Despite this, they continue to declare their loyalty to the person who caught their eye - "I'm always there for you, I'm ready." In the final lines, the singer seems to have regained some of their confidence, "when things got so much better, we seemed to fall even lower." They're urging the person to stop trying to hold them down and instead take on the world with them.
