My Song
Runaway June Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would sing it aloud and I would sing it long
Straight from the heart, I′d sing it true
Then I'd come back down from that singin′ mountain
Life would be better 'cause I sang it for you

It's a-many a-day that the road gets weary
Many a-day that the way is long
Often I say that I can′t do this no more
But I′d miss the travelin' and I′d miss the songs

'Cause I was born to sing but not to wind and space
But people′s hearts, people's tears
′Tis a gift from God that I pray I'd use it
Sing to their hearts and sing to their ears

Yeah, I would sing it aloud and I would sing it long
Straight from the heart I'd sing it true
Then I′d come back down from that singin′ mountain
Life would be better 'cause I sang it for you, yeah

For a song can soar like a lofty eagle
And lift a heart that has fallen low
A song can shine like the light in the darkness
And make the downcast look up and glow, yeah

I wish I owned a great high mountain
With people below every way I turned
They′d look up and every ear could hear me
I'd sing my song to all the hearts that yearned

And I would sing it aloud and I would sing it long
Straight from the heart I′d sing it true
Then I'd come back down from that singin′ mountain
Life would be better 'cause I sang it for you

Yes, I would sing it aloud and I would sing it long
Straight from the heart I'd sing it true
Then I′d come back down from that singin′ mountain
Life would be better 'cause I sang it for you

Yes, I would come back down from that singin′ mountain
Life would be better 'cause I sang it for you

Overall Meaning

Runaway June's song "My Song" is a beautifully written ode to the power of music, and the impact that it can have on people's lives. The lead singer expresses a deep desire to share her gift of singing with the world, in order to bring happiness and hope to those who are struggling. She imagines herself on top of a high mountain, singing her heart out to the people below, and describes the ways in which music can lift people up and bring them out of darkness.

Throughout the lyrics, the singer emphasizes that she would sing her song "aloud and long", and that she would do so "straight from the heart" and "true". She explains that singing is not just a talent, but a gift from God that she feels compelled to share with others. She knows that life can be difficult and tiring, but she loves the thrill of traveling and performing, and the opportunity it gives her to reach people through her music.

The chorus of "My Song" repeats several times throughout the song, conveying the message that life would be better for both the singer and her listeners if she were able to sing her heart out as she longs to do. Overall, "My Song" is a moving tribute to the power of music to heal, inspire, and uplift those who hear it.

If you do your research you will find that Johnny Cash loved young people and wanted his works to live on into the future. These are his words written by him that have been put to music and song - he would have been thrilled to know that the current generation cared/cares still about him and his words/lyrics to put them to music almost 18 years after his passing. His family is honoring his memory and keeping his legacy alive for which I am very grateful - I am constantly searching for Johnny Cash material, both new, new to me, and old. Even if this musical arrangement is not to your liking personally, Runaway June is honoring Johnny in their way and he would have appreciated that, and many of us do like it, so please be at least respectful in your comments. Johnny was not afraid to cross genres and try new styles.

@J M - I stated research - I am not presuming to know what was in Johnny’s mind. In Johnny Cash’s almost 50-year career he was repeatedly interviewed (at least a couple hundred times if not more) and his thoughts, opinions and words are documented in numerous written articles, video-taped interviews and voice-recorded interviews- plus there are his autobiographies. If you research you can come across some of these interviews and learn about/hear directly from the Man in Black. Also, if you look at the Johnny Cash documentary entitled “The Gift” that is on YouTube (it came out in 2019) most of the narration/information is provided verbally by Johnny from recorded interviews.

For those of you confused and being rude. This is a song made using stuff that johnny cash himself wrote that was never released. Several artists did the same thing and made it into an album. Runaway June are giving johnny cash the credit by saying he is one of the songs artists because he wrote the material.
