Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Running Wild Lyrics

The pain of tribulation is what you're going through
Determination is on you, cause fate's in your own hand
The power of seduction is the test you have to stand
Days of war and thunder, that's what the dark lives on
A fast trip on a one-way until all good is gone
They love to see you falling, to save their binding spell
Death is calling, unerring destiny
Black heart's falling, for all eternity
Resurrection, the soul survivors stand
Chain-reaction, but the good at heart will stand the hand of fate
So see the whole connection, between all things they do
They try to daze your senses, cause the evil's never true
They promise you their heaven, they're giving you their hell
A ticket to damnation is what these people sell

Chorus...
The lyrics of Running Wild's song Resurrection speak about the struggle between light and darkness, and the internal turmoil that a person goes through when they are tested by tribulations, seduction, and fate. The song talks about the journey that a person goes through where they are tested by the power of seduction and the tricks of those who want to see them fall. The lyrics speak about the battle between good and evil, and how evil always tries to sway people towards darkness by trying to dazzle them with false promises.
The pain and suffering that a person goes through are described as a test of their determination, as they have the power of their fate in their own hands. The song indicates that life is full of struggles, but it is the strength of an individual that helps them stand against the darkness. The chorus of the song talks about resurrection, which symbolizes the idea of rising up from the ashes and standing tall in the face of adversity.
