Towards 1970 there began to materialise the Basque City. Never before had the noun and the adjective joined together. One spoke of the Mountain, the Earth, the Nation, all of them Basque; but the privileged space where the world became truly wide seemed forbidden to those who wished to express themselves in the language that sustains the adjective, the Basque tongue. It was as if someone, the Spirit of the Time, for example, might have hurled out an order: "Either change your language, or change your place". Which in the case of RO, meant: "Dear friend, either devote yourself to romantic music or to patriotic music. And if not, give it up". The message was clear. It meant solitude. And it was a curse. A snare.
RO put up with the solitude, and against the long road he opposed his will and his intelligence. RO forgot the curse: from his first records, his material was diverse, general, non-religious: he could do with the laundry, a van, or a visit from a woman. RO eluded the snare: instead of crossing to the other side of the border, he remained close to it and took on its history. He didn¹t become the chameleon of the storybook tale, neither in a branch of the General Bank of Music, nor in the International Basque Singer for Tourists. He remained a personal creator, with committed lyrics and music towards his loved, hated, distant, close Basque City.

Gure herriaz.
Goiz eta arrats berriketan
Gure herriaz.
Nik ere nahi nituzke
Halako segurtasunak eduki.
Baina, gauzak zer diren,
kontuak ez zaizkit ateratzen ongi.
Nonnahikoak diren hoiena!
Sasi guztien gainetikan
Dabiltza hegan.
Inork ez zidan esan
Euskaldun izatea zein nekeza den,
Hobe nuela hautazea
Munduko hiritar izatea.
Kantu leunak
Nahi nituzke jarri.
Eguzkia
Ainubian denari.
Zaindu maite duzun hori.
Hala esaten didate:
Zertan zabiltza maite kontuetan?
Elkarbizitza jokuan
Eta zu, berriz, bertso ttikietan.
Kantu leunak
Nahi nituzke jarri.
Eguzkia
Ainubian denari.
Zaindu maite duzun hori.
Zaindu gorroto duzun hori.
Zaindu...
The lyrics of Ruper Ordorika's song "Zaindu Maite Duzu Hori" touch upon various themes pertaining to the sense of belonging and identity of the Basque people. The first stanza speaks about the opinions and beliefs that individuals hold about their nation, and the desire to possess a sense of security in their own land. However, the many complexities and complications that come along with trying to understand such a notion become apparent, and the lines suggest a certain difficulty in grasping these concepts.
The second stanza carries on this thread of sentiment, and reflects on the many difficulties that come with a person's identity. The question of what it means to be Basque is addressed, and the theme of cultural conflict is referred to. The song then reveals that ultimately, what is held onto as an emblem of identity and love is a force beyond human comprehension, something that can be immeasurably deep and personal - this feeling is described as being "zaindu maite duzun hori" (the thing you hold dear).
In "Zaindu Maite Duzu Hori," Ordorkia has created a song that speaks to a complex set of cultural, social, and historical factors that surround the Basque people. Despite its abstract and introspective approach, the song maintains a profound and moving tone, perhaps connecting with listeners through the ethereal quality of its sound.
