The Long Way Home
Rupert Holmes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I haven't seen you in a month of Sundays
Ah you look so good today
You're that instant rush of breeze
That shakes the pine combs from their trees
And blows the smoke of stale acquaintances away

This quiet town seems just they way we left it
When we left not long ago
Though we know each by heart
Lets take the maze of lanes from start
And ease ourselves along the path we used to know

The long way home
The long way home
Let's walk the long way home
Long after dark we strolled the park
We're hand in hand we roam past the shores
Where love was sure to foam
I'll take you back
The long way home

And so I love you like I loved this river
As if flows from then to there
Like that silent village pond
Like the rabbits far beyond
You are the answer to a not forgotten prayer

The long way home
The long way home
Let's walk the long way home
Long after dark we strolled the park
We're hand in hand we roam past the shores
Where love was sure to foam

I'll take you back
The long way home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rupert Holmes's song The Long Way Home express the singer's joy at reuniting with a loved one after a long time apart. The opening lines of the song reveal that the singer hasn't seen the other person in a long time: "I haven't seen you in a month of Sundays." However, the singer is clearly happy to see the other person, telling them "you look so good today."

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the past and the way things used to be. They describe how being with the other person is like a "rush of breeze" that blows away "the smoke of stale acquaintances." The singer suggests taking "the long way home," meandering through the "maze of lanes" they used to know so well, and strolling past the shores where their love used to foam. These lyrics suggest a strong connection between the singer and the other person, a connection that has been rekindled by their reunion.

The final stanza of the song is particularly poetic. The singer compares their love for the other person to their love for a river or a village pond, elements of nature that flow or sit quietly and steadily, much like their feelings for the person they're addressing. Overall, the lyrics of The Long Way Home seem to celebrate the reunion of two people who have a deep, abiding love for one another.

Haven't heard in in a long while. Still brings back good memories. Love Mr. Holmes' lyrics:

"You're that instant rush of breeze
that shakes the pine cones from the trees
and blows the smoke of stale acquaintances away."

Surprised to learn just now that this was NOT released as a single in the US. It was a mild hit here in the Philippines in the late 1970s and got lots of radio play back then. There's nothing like a good song to bring the past back. Thanks for the music, Mr. Holmes.
