Widescreen
Rupert Holmes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There are songs that sound like movies
There are themes that fill the screen
There are lines I say that sound as if they're written
There are looks I wear the theater should have seen
But though I've made my life a movie
The matinee must end by five
And I must stagger out into the blinding sunlight half alive
Wishing I were back inside the picture show
There where it's always night
Notice how the screen is wide
The second row I'd sit around you tight
Will I stay? Yes, I might

Widescreen wide around my eyes
Blind my mind with lies
Find a world like nothing that I've seen
Oh widescreen dreams are just my size

As we walk from out the movie
Do I look like Steve McQueen?
Does the orchestra play chords
When we start loving?
Do we move just like slow motion
On the screen?
Life's a constant disappointment
When you live on celluloid
But my movie expectations are a dream I can't avoid
Waiting for a girl to say the things
That I heard in a film last night
But she doesn't want to play the role
And she can't pick her cues up right
Will I dream? Yes, I might

Oh widescreen wide around my eyes
Blind my mind with lies
Find a world like nothing that I've seen
Oh widescreen take the world away
Break me from the day
Make me be what's not for real

And make me feel like a star
Make me what you are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Rupert Holmes's song Widescreen reflect on the emotional connections that many individuals can hold to the movies they watch. The song starts by highlighting the captivating power of a good movie, which can be so immersive that it feels like living in an alternate reality. The lyrics mention how songs can sound like movies, themes fill the screen, lines are written, and costumes look like something out of a theater production. The imagery displayed through these lines makes it seem like the singer's life has become a movie where they have become an actor living out the scenes. However, despite the captivating nature of the cinema, the singer is pulled back into the real world when the matinee ends and they are forced to rejoin society. The world outside the theater is not always as captivating and lacks the same cathartic release and simplicity that watching a movie provides. As the song continues, the lyrics become more introspective, with the singer acknowledging how their expectations of life are rapidly influenced by what they see on the big screen. They begin to question whether they too appear glamorous and suave like Steve McQueen, if the orchestra plays when they fall in love, or if they move in the same way as slow-motion scenes. The song seems to culminate with the singer's desire to live in a world that is as captivating and immersive as the movies they watch, where they can feel like a star and be what they are not in real life.

But though Ive made my life a movie

Notice how the screen is wide
The second role, Ive said around too tight
Will I stay? Yes, I might

Oh, widescreen wider on my eyes
Lie my mind with lies
Find the world like nothing that Ive seen
Oh, widescreen dreams are just my sighs

As we walk from out the movie
Are we acting out a scene
Does the orchestra play chords when we start loving?
Do we move just like slow motion on the screen?

Life's a constant disappointment
When you live on celluloid
But my movie expectations are a dream

Waiting for a man to say the things
That I heard in the film last night
But he doesn't want to play the role
And he cant pick his cues up right

Oh, widescreen winding 'round my eyes
Blinding me with lies
Finding Ive been fooled by what Ive seen

No, widescreen dreams are more than you
How can lies be true?
All we have is life and mind
And love we find with a friend

Oh, let the movie end

It is a shame that this artist is known only for his Pina Colada song, This album is so clever and entertaining; I wish more people knew of it.

Yeah, hip dude. Clever and probably too smart/talented for the general public.

Lord that chorus! Those chord and string movements are just absolutely gold

This is a masterpiece of arranging. I loved his work producing Streisand's Lazy Afternoon album. I'd never heard HIS recording of Widescreen. It's so much better! Moving on to his other pieces! Thank you for this!

A friend and I found this record in at our local watering hole in East Texas with some debris that washed up after the hurricane. This song was the only name we could make out on the label. This is dope I am glad I found it and now it's a special song for me (: peace and love ✌😇🌈

Thanks for posting this. Holmes is an amazing talent; a truly great songwriter, in both pop music and musical theatre (and he has the Tony Awards to prove it). This, the first of several albums he recorded for Epic in the 1970s, demonstrates a thoughtful, clever lyricist writing for an instinctual ear for hooks and catchy dissonance. And there are few more bittersweet ballads of lost opportunities for love than "Terminal."

How sad that this arguably brilliant artist -- who also had Tin Pan Alley in his blood, and is guilty of TV commercial jingles and enabling the atrocities of such personages as Barry Manilow and Donna Summer by committing the sin of Disco songwriting -- should be best remembered for the worst and most pandering work of his long, multifaceted career (his plays, novels, and screenplays are delightful, and he is the creator of the long-running TV series REMEMBER WENN):

Hideous tripe about pina coladas and answering machines. P. T. Barnum must be laughing in his grave.

Ben Reed

This includes what must be one of the best choruses of all time. I've been humming it for the last two days! Arghhh. Help!

What a talent; producer and session kyboardist was when I first heard his name(produced Strawbs DEEP CUTS in '77). I worked in music retail management so I was aware of his name when "Piña Colada" hit in '79. I played his album ADVENTURE a lot when it was released in '80. It wasn't until much later that I caught his connection to The Buoys; "Timothy" - also playing keyboards on their album. Of course we're not even talking about his writing for Broadway, his authorship and all-around musical ability. Very under-rated and under appreciated.

Clee Jackson

This should have been a hit for him. He and Barbra Streisand both made their great and respectively different versions. They are adventurous and unique. He was a brilliant songwriter, and he should been more noticed as a singer instead of being considered a two-hit wonder (with "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" and "Him").
