Cruel Sun
Rusted Root Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the bloody faces lifted to the sky
Do you want to run to a future left behind?
I remember asking why, there lies aggression.
Separation where there should be love
Power plays while the people die

[Chorus]
Let it rain and protect us from this cruel sun
Let it rain and protect us from this cruel sun

I remember asking why, there lies aggression
Separation where there should be love
Power plays while the people die
I remember asking why, I remember asking why
I remember asking why, I remember asking why, why.

Open up your eyes, your eyes and let the child learn.
Open up your eyes, and let the child learn

[Chorus]

Why does war kill only the small man?
Why does war kill only the small man?
I think we know, yes, we know
I think we know, know, know

I remember asking why.
I remember asking why.
I remember asking why.

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Cruel Sun" by Rusted Root depict a scene of violence and despair, with 'bloody faces lifted to the sky'. The singer questions whether we want to 'run to a future left behind'. This could be interpreted as a warning against the danger of ignoring current issues and failing to take action to create a better future. The repetition of the line 'I remember asking why, there lies aggression' serves to emphasize the confusion and despair felt in the face of such senseless brutality, suggesting that those perpetrating it are motivated by something other than logic or reason. The following lines highlight the tragic irony of power structures that perpetuate death and suffering even as they claim to serve and protect the people.

The chorus provides a glimmer of hope, urging the rain to come and 'protect us from this cruel sun', perhaps symbolizing the need for cleansing and healing after a period of suffering. The repetition of the line 'I remember asking why' underscores the ongoing quest for understanding and meaning in the face of events that seem to defy explanation. The second verse advises the listener to 'open up your eyes, and let the child learn', suggesting that this search for meaning and enlightenment is a lifelong process of growth and learning, and that wisdom can come from anyone, regardless of age or experience.

Overall, "Cruel Sun" is a powerful and haunting song that captures the confusion, pain, and hopelessness of living in a world where violence and cruelty seem all too common. The lyrics offer a challenge to the listener to question power structures and seek to understand the causes of conflict and suffering, while also offering the hope of renewal and healing through a commitment to learning and growth.

Still as powerful and timeless as the first time I heard it. Soulful, deep, thought-provoking and uplifting. I need much more of this in my life.

@Brian Stuk as a 15 year old I promise to keep this song remembered in our generation! I'll share it and will never let this masterpiece be forgotten, this age of music to me symbolizes freedom and many more things, my Father showed this album to me about a year ago and I've loved it ever since. Maybe one day there will be a band called Cruel Sun that plays RR's songs in honor of them :)

My sister died a week ago today. This was her favorite band. Play it loud enough for the heavens to hear it and think of those we've lost.
