Paratrooper's Battlecry
Ruston Kelly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feels like I'm cursed when the drugs don't work
So I bought a statue of Jesus
And listen to Abby's old high school demos
And smoked a bag of reefer
I got bills coming up, debts still due
And I've got too much on my mind
To stay in the moment
It's always blowing out the windows and into the night

Stay behind me
My one sweet Loraine
Stay in the shadow of the tower that fell
Build me a castle, Maria, I'd pray
Take these weeds outta my head
When I'm barely living and almost dead
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Almost dead

I'm sick of getting lifted
Sick of going under
Tired of giving too much
I've been down in a hole for so long
I don't know if any love could fill it back up
I gotta move on and learn the times to be brave
Can't live in them old mistakes
And I remember what TK said:
"You can't scare no boat by looking back at the wake"

Stay behind me
My one sweet Loraine
Stay in the shadow of the tower that fell
And build me a castle, Maria, I'd pray
Way up high and outta my head
When I'm barely living and almost dead
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Almost dead

Stay behind me
My one sweet Loraine
Stay in the shadow of the tower that fell
And build me a castle, Maria, I'd pray
Take these weeds outta my head
When I'm barely living and almost dead

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Almost dead

Overall Meaning

The song "Paratrooper's Battlecry" by Ruston Kelly is a poignant and emotional track about a person struggling with addiction, depression, and financial problems. The lyrics describe the singer's frustration with their addictive behavior, as they feel cursed when drugs don't work. To cope, they turn to a statue of Jesus and old high school demos, and smoke marijuana. The song acknowledges the singer's debts and bills that are still due, and how they cannot stay in the present because their mind is always on something else.

The chorus of the song talks of several women who could potentially help the singer, including Maria and Loraine. They ask the women to guide them through their problems, take the weeds out of their head, and build them a castle to escape their own minds. The song deals with themes of loneliness and isolation, as the singer feels like they are "barely living and almost dead." The lyrics also mention the advice given to them by TK, who advises not to get bogged down by past mistakes.

In conclusion, "Paratrooper's Battlecry" is a song that vividly describes the pain and struggles of addiction, depression, and loneliness. Kelly's raw and emotional lyrics capture these feelings perfectly and create a somber, yet powerful track.

Who is "TK"?

@martyjonesandme

Answering my own question after having heard an interview: It's Ruston's father Tim Kelly. He mentions that his dad has lots of "truth bombs" and the admonition that "you can steer the boat by looking back at the wake" is one of those.
