Genesis
Ryan Beatty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Basically an atheist, he's all that I believe in right now
The torch is out, I'm begging for the torture now
Half a stoner, practically an adolescent, insert here industrial sounds

Ever since Jerusalem, had a change of heart
You went back to genesis, found God
But not the one you were looking for
Not the one you were looking for
Not the one you were looking for
Am I the one you were looking for
Am I the one you were looking for

Erasing my intolerance to nicotine and you are quite the opposite
Lace it with what you offered me
Cured from the ivy
Roses on loan (seeing double)
Laid on a throne (peripheral)
This is on the radio, hold me tightly
Say your name out loud
That's faith, that's fate (now)

Ever since Jerusalem, had a change of heart
You went back to genesis, found God
But not the one you were looking for
Not the one you were looking for
Not the one you were looking for
Am I the one you were looking for
Am I the one you were looking for

Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room
Heaven made the rules

Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room (shine like light)
Heavens in the room
Heavens in the room (shine like light)
Heavens in the room

Heavens in the room
Heaven made the rules

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ryan Beatty's song "Genesis" delve into themes of faith, self-discovery, and the search for meaning. The first verse explores the singer's relationship with someone who is essentially their source of belief, despite identifying as an atheist. The torch being out represents a loss of guidance or direction, and the longing for torture suggests a desire for struggle or challenge.

The mention of being half a stoner and practically an adolescent, along with the industrial sounds, might imply a sense of rebellion or experimentation in the singer's life. However, these elements are juxtaposed with references to Jerusalem and Genesis, recalling biblical imagery and mirroring a journey of self-reflection and spiritual exploration.

The chorus focuses on the transformative power of experiences in Jerusalem and Genesis. The singer suggests that the person they are addressing has found God, but not the God they were originally seeking. There is a yearning to be the one they were looking for, highlighting the desire for validation and acceptance.

The following verse touches on the idea of erasing intolerance and accepting differences, symbolized by the reference to nicotine and the contrast between the singer and the person mentioned. The line "Cured from the ivy" suggests liberation from entanglements or toxic influences, while "roses on loan" and "laid on a throne" could represent fleeting moments of happiness or moments of feeling elevated. The reference to the radio signals connectivity and the need for connection, while saying the name out loud signifies a sense of trust and vulnerability.

The repetition of "heavens in the room" emphasizes a spiritual presence, suggesting that divinity is within reach and can be experienced intimately. The line "heaven made the rules" reminds us of the existence and power of divine order.

Overall, "Genesis" seems to convey a journey of self-discovery, faith, and encountering the unexpected in search of a greater sense of purpose and belonging.

Tamires Marcelino

this song makes me feel like i’m an angel in Eden, where there’s nothing but grass and flowers and sparkling clean water rivers, butterflies are flying all around and the sky is as bright as it will ever be, but the sun shining doesn’t do much harm, because of the calm, pure breeze.

there’s no religion or god; just peace and beauty, and i can hear the other angels from a distance as they play this melody in their harps.

as an atheist, these are new feelings i’m discovering, and i had no idea one could feel heaven through music.
