Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tedder is of Welsh descent[citation needed] and was raised by an extended family of missionaries and pastors. He began learning to play the piano at the age of three via the Suzuki method. His early interest in music was prompted by his musician father and school-teacher mother, who coaxed their young son into practicing piano in exchange for candy corn. Tedder started singing at the age of seven.A self-taught vocalist, Tedder began honing this skill at the age of twelve by imitating his favorite artists, who ranged from The Beatles to acts as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder and Sting. He has commented, "I sang for two hours a day every day of my life until I was eighteen." He continued to perform musically during his adolescence through church, school, and personally formed groups.
In his senior year, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. There he met and became friends with future OneRepublic band-mate Zach Filkins on their soccer team at the Colorado Springs Christian School. He attended Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma and began to showcase his own material there. Tedder completed his college education and graduated from ORU in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations and Advertising.
Calling
Ryan Tedder Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That won't change
Together we vow that our colors will sparkle the faith
And I will find you
I will find you
I will reach you
Or I, I, I will lose my mind
Lose my mind
Lose my mind
Yeah
I will lose my mind
Yeah
Lose my mind
Yeah
Maybe heaven right now is a devil or angel away
That won't change
Together we vow that our colors will sparkle the faith
And I will find you
I will find you
I will reach you
Or I, I, I will lose my mind
Lose my mind
Will lose my mind
I will lose my mind
Yeah
Will lose my mind
Yeah
The lyrics to Ryan Tedder's "Calling" portray the singer's determination to locate and reach someone that they are searching for, no matter the cost. They suggest that perhaps the idea of heaven, whether that be a place of eternal happiness or peace, is located only a short distance away from the singer's current location. However, despite their proximity, there is still a chance that the individual that they are looking for may be in the grasp of either a devil or an angel - this line could be interpreted to mean that anything could happen to the person they are searching for, regardless of how close they might be.
The use of the phrase "sparkle the faith" may suggest that the singer is either religious or spiritual in nature, and is looking for this person as a matter of faith. The repeated line "I will find you," along with the emphasis on the idea of losing one's mind, further highlights the importance of this search to the singer. The singer is willing to risk their mental stability in order to locate this person - it is an intense feeling of longing that comes through in these lyrics.
Overall, the lyrics to "Calling" illustrate the depth of emotion and drive that can be associated with looking for someone who is important to you. The fact that the idea of heaven is mentioned suggests that this search is of massive importance to the singer, and that no matter the hardship, they will continue searching until they find what they are looking for.
