Riot
S.O.A. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's no choice, they've turned on you
Destroy the city, smash it all to bits
They won't stop, they don't give a shit
[Chorus:]
Sticks and stones- Riot
Break your bones- Riot
You're the Blame- Riot
You're gonna die, you and your friends
You made it start, they made it end
[Chorus]
The lyrics to S.O.A.'s song Riot speak to a moment of social unrest and the fury of those who have been oppressed for far too long. Frustration and anger have reached a boiling point, and the only solution seems to be to destroy everything in sight. The line "there's a war on the street, watcha gonna do" speaks volumes to how powerless those who have been pushed to the brink might feel. It's as though they have no choice but to take up arms against the system that has failed them so miserably.
The refrain of the song is a bleak reflection of the dire situation at hand. "Sticks and stones, break your bones, stores in flames, you're the blame" is both a warning and a curse, a way of saying that the violence that is about to unfold is not to be taken lightly. The final verse provides little comfort, as the singer tells the listener that they are doomed, along with their friends. The implication is clear - this is just the beginning of something that is going to end very badly for everyone involved.
One interesting fact about the song Riot is that it was originally released as part of a compilation album called Flex Your Head, which also featured bands like Minor Threat and Government Issue. Another interesting fact is that S.O.A. was one of the early projects of Ian MacKaye, who would go on to form the influential punk bands Fugazi and Minor Threat. The song's lyrics were inspired by the social unrest that was taking place in Washington D.C. at the time, specifically the riots that occurred after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The song has been covered by a number of other bands over the years, including Bad Brains and The Go-Go's.

Once upon a time long ago in the town of Charming there lived the most dangerous and most handsome of outlaws. Word is that his intelligence surpassed the most brutal of his enemies. He was said to have bedded many women but only one in particular was most special to him and had his heart. He was a fierce defender of his brothers and loved his children most of all. They said he had a heart of gold but lost it. Some say he found it.
His name was Jackson Teller
