The band, fronted by Mary Davis, was initially famous for the post-disco hit "Take Your Time (Do It Right)" in 1979. In 1982, they joined forces with then-new production team Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who went on to craft a string of R&B hits for the group, including "Just Be Good to Me", "Tell Me If You Still Care", "Feeling", and "Borrowed Love".
The Jam/Lewis produced SOS Band hits are notable for popularizing the use of the Roland TR-808 drum machine (and its distinctive cowbell sound) in popular music. The group continues to tour and perform to this day.
In "The Finest" the male singer is no other than Alexander O'Neal.

I try to reach for you. but you have closed my mind
Whatever happened to our love? I wish I understood
It used to be so nice. It used to be so good
So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me S.O.S.?
The love you gave me. nothing else can save me, S.O.S.
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
You seem so far away though you are standing near
You made me feel alive but something died I fear
I really tried to make it out. I wish I understood
What happened to our love? It used to be so good
So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me S.O.S.?
The love you gave me. nothing else can save me, S.O.S.
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone though I try how can I carry on?
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone though I try how can I carry on?
The lyrics of S.O.S. by the S.O.S. Band express the pain of a person who has lost the love of their life. The melancholic tune and lyrics capture the desperation and intense emotions of someone trying to hold onto a fading relationship. The singer laments the loss of happy days and wonders why their love couldn't be sustained. They try to reach out to their loved one but their mind is closed off. The singer is aware that the love they once shared used to be so nice and good but now it has faded away.
The chorus of the song contains the lines "So when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me S.O.S.? The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S". Here, the singer is pleading for their partner's attention, begging them to listen to their cries for help before it's too late. The love that they once shared was the only thing that kept them going and now that it's gone, they feel lost and helpless. In the end, the singer acknowledges that even though they try to carry on, they cannot do it alone. They need their partner's love to survive and thrive.
Overall, S.O.S. by the S.O.S. Band is a poignant song about the pain and desperation of losing the love of your life. The lyrics express the fear, confusion, and intense emotions that come with a failing relationship, and the melody captivates the listener's attention with its soulful tune and heartfelt vocals.
