SOCCER Lyrics

I've seen you twice, in a short time
Only a week since we started
It seems to me, for every time
I'm getting more open-hearted

I was an impossible case
No-one ever could reach me
But I think I can see in your face
There's a lot you can teach me
So I wanna know

What's the name of the game?
Does it mean anything to you?
What's the name of the game?
Can you feel it the way I do?
Tell me please, 'cause I have to know
I'm a bashful child, beginning to grow

And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I'm trying to conceal
If I trust in you, would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me, if I said I care for you?
Could you feel the same way too?
I wanna know

The name of the game

I have no friends, no-one to see
And I am never invited
Now I am here, talking to you
No wonder I get excited

Your smile, and the sound of your voice
And the way you see through me
Got a feeling, you give me no choice
But it means a lot to me
So I wanna know

What's the name of the game? (Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Does it mean anything to you? (Got a feeling you give me no choice)
(But it means a lot)
What's the name of the game? (Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Can you feel it the way I do?
Tell me please, 'cause I have to know
I'm a bashful child, beginning to grow

And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I'm trying to conceal
If I trust in you, would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me, if I said I care for you?
Could you feel the same way too?
I wanna know
Oh yes I wanna know

The name of the game (I was an impossible case)
Does it mean anything to you? (But I think I can see in your face)
(That it means a lot)
What's the name of the game? (Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Can you feel it the way I do? (Got a feeling you give me no choice)
(But it means a lot)
What's the name of the game? (I was an impossible case)

Does it mean anything to you? (But I think I can see in your face)
(That it means a lot)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of ABBA’s “The Name of the Game” is a powerful declaration of newfound love, vulnerability and uncertainty that comes along with it. The song narrates the journey of a person who is suddenly drawn towards someone they have met only recently. The singer is now more open-hearted and vulnerable, capable of trusting someone else with their feelings. The singer acknowledges their past, describing it as an “impossible case” where nobody could make a real connection with them. However, the singer now sees something in the other person’s face that could make a difference - something that they can learn from. And thus, the singer wants to know the name of the game, the game of love, that the other person and the singer seem to be playing. The singer is conscious that they are starting out as a bashful child, “beginning to grow” and this relationship would have a significant impact on their life.

The lyrics in “The Name of the Game” highlights the themes of love, vulnerability, communication and uncertainty. The singer wants to know if the person they're falling in love with feels the same way as they do. The vulnerability of being hurt is something that anyone would relate to. The singer is unsure if they are capable of making the right decisions regarding their newfound love. However, despite the risk of being hurt, the singer is willing to trust their emotions with the person they're in love with, and they hope that the other person will reciprocate those feelings.

First heard this during the USA 1994 World Cup. I still get chills listening to it. What a great tournament that was!

@anthonyzullo

I first heard it during the movie The Replacements, I became a field goal kicker and always played this to myself before every kick. Then went on to be a QB and safety and always played this in my head before big plays. I steadily to this day kicked 70 yard goals at 32 and still throw rocks 80 yards with ease. Never wanted to be famous or play professionally, just doing what my brothers asked. Then when we got into soccer later we were ruthless. Italians! The fight is the joy! Ole ole, ole ole ole!
