Chicago rapper/producer Saba first caught the attention of listeners as a frequent collaborator of Chance the Rapper. Saba's contributions to Chance songs like 2013's "Everybody's Something" and 2015's "Angels" showcased his range as both a rapper and vocalist and paved the way for his introspective debut studio album, Bucket List Project, in 2016. The loss of a close family member inspired 2018's Care for Me, a tragically beautiful album that explored death, mourning, and life after losing a loved one.
Saba (Tahj Malik Chandler) grew up on the West Side of Chicago, specifically within the Austin neighborhood, as part of a deeply musical family. That's also where he formed Pivot Gang, a group of longtime associates that has featured, among others, his brother Jerrel (aka Joseph Chilliams), cousin Walter Long (aka John Walt), Logan Yutters (aka MFn Melo), Frsh Waters, and DJ Damnage. Saba recorded several solo mixtapes -- his first were issued while he was an introverted high-schooler -- and gained traction with ComfortZone, a 2014 release inspired by his father's neo-soul recordings that capitalized on his contributions to awareness-raising tracks by fellow Chicagoans Chance the Rapper and Mick Jenkins. In 2015, Saba appeared as featured artist on several cuts, including Chance's "Angels," Jenkins' "Slumber," and Odd Couple's "What Kings Do." Additionally, he released the reflective Tink collaboration "Temporary," one of his most commercial songs to date.
In late 2016, Saba self-released the LP Bucket List Project, featuring artists like fellow Chicagoan rappers Noname and Twista. In February of 2017, Saba's cousin, mentor, and Pivot Gang collaborator Walter Long was violently murdered by a stranger. Saba reflected on the scars left by this horrible loss throughout his second album, CARE FOR ME, which was released in April of 2018. The vulnerable and emotionally complex album broke through with critics and took Saba's music to new audiences. He followed in November of that year with "Beautiful Smile," a collaborative single with Maryland rapper IDK.

Ay, yeah
All the bae's on me, they biased
Put a few pounds, no diet
Got this shit down to a science
Yeah, I get so excited
I do not need no diamonds
We do not wait, not righteous
Yeah, I get so excited
All the bae's on me, they biased
Put a few pounds, no diet
Got this shit down to a science
Yeah, I get so excited
I do not need no diamonds
She do not need no vices
We do not wait, not righteous
Yeah, I get so excited
I be on the road
'Nother dollar, 'nother day
If she tell me not to go
Then all I could do is wait
I said I be on the road
'Nother dollar, 'nother day
If she tell me not to go
Then all I could do is wait
Ay, ay, look
Heard your shit, it is not fire
New shit coming like a tidal wave
Been in that booth like five whole days
Chicago survival rate
I'ma keep it jazz like Johnny 'Trane
Y'all niggas countin' everybody's lane
Saba like [?] oh my god, ay
But I drop hits like Johnny Cage
Stage dive nigga, no shirt, red alert
And I'm from the same city, like Dirk, can't revert
To the same shit that make a baby burp
All gas, no brakes if I do I'll wanna skrt
Her favorite rapper Cardi so she told me "Okurr!"
And if I'm at a party then I'm [?] first
I don't wanna judge, no this is not church
But if she wanna touch, the decision hers
I may dance on another planet, Richard Branson
All the bae's on me, they biased
Put a few pounds, no diet
Got this shit down to a science
Yeah, I get so excited
I do not need no diamonds
She do not need no vices
We do not wait, not righteous
Yeah, I get so excited
I be on the road
'Nother dollar, 'nother day
If she tell me not to go
Then all I could do is wait
I said I be on the road
'Nother dollar, 'nother day
If she tell me not to go
Then all I could do is wait
The lyrics of Saba's song "Excited" express his excitement about his success and accomplishments. He mentions that all the girls are attracted to him, and they may be biased because of it. He emphasizes that he doesn't need materialistic things like diamonds, and his partner doesn't need vices either. They don't wait for others' approval or validation, as they know they are righteous and confident. Saba feels so excited about his life and achievements that he can't contain his enthusiasm.
The song also touches on Saba's dedication to his career. He spends a lot of time on the road and tirelessly works for his success, acknowledging that it's a never-ending cycle of earning money. If someone asks him to stay, he acknowledges that he has to wait and fulfill his commitments. Saba also mentions his music style, likening himself to Jazz musician John Coltrane, known as "Johnny 'Trane." He asserts that he drops hits like Johnny Cage, a character from the Mortal Kombat video game series, implying his confidence in his musical abilities. He also references some popular culture, like rapper Cardi B and entrepreneur Richard Branson.
Overall, "Excited" showcases Saba's excitement, confidence, and dedication to his craft, emphasizing his lack of reliance on material possessions and external validation.
