Reign of Terror
Sabaton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sky is on fire burning black gold
Eyes of the west turn to east
Driven by greed and an urge to destroy
Merciless killing your own

Slave to the power a slave to the gold
Ruthlessly ruling the east
Your reign of terror must come to an end
Fighting your unholy war

Now you will pay we'll charge you our way
Sooner or later we'll get you
Don't try to hide in your holes underground
Just like an insect we'll smoke you right out

Night time prime time
Ancient legacy of crime
One day we will make you pay for

Night time prime time
Law and order pays the fine
Genocide you cannot justify

Chaos in east disorder in west
Desert storm is a go
Fighters are launched from the carriers at sea
Infantry coming your way

Armored brigades engaging their lines
Regain control of black gold
Your reign of terror will come to an end
Forcing you out of control

Countdown to death we're coming for you
Making our way through the desert
Soon you will pay for the pain that you caused
Captured or dead you will cause no more harm

Feet after feet mile after mile
Allies regaining control
Your cities in ruins a people in need
Still you go on as before

Feet after feet mile after mile
Allies returning the land

Hide underground as the coward you are
One day we're coming for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sabaton's song, "Reign of Terror," paint a picture of the battle between the Western world and the Middle East for control over the region's precious natural resources. The opening lyrics, "The sky is on fire burning black gold," allude to the oil-rich lands of the Middle East which have long been the subject of conflict and tension. The song condemns the West's greed-driven campaign to impose their will on the East, with lines such as "driven by greed and an urge to destroy" and "merciless killing your own."

The song describes this reign of terror as a two-sided conflict, with both parties committing atrocities in the name of power and wealth. The lyrics speak to the plight of the citizens caught in the middle of the conflict, with images of cities in ruins and a people in need. Sabaton maintains a message of hope, with lyrics suggesting that the Allies will ultimately prevail and put an end to the carnage. The song champions the idea of law and order, with the lines "night time prime time, law and order pays the fine, genocide you cannot justify," emphasizing the moral wrongs of genocide and the imperative of justice.

Sabaton's "Reign of Terror" is a powerful commentary on the horrors of war and the price of greed. Through vivid imagery and a driving musical arrangement, the song captures the desperation and determination of people caught in the crossfire of political ambition and resource exploitation.

For those interested, a little background information:
The Gulf War began with Iraq's annexation of Kuwait. A coalition fought against Iraq and the government of Kuwait controlled by it, which included The United States, Great Britain, France, as well as some former allies of the USSR, and was even supported by the Soviet Union, which was then on the verge of collapse.

So, after the events of August 2-3, 1990, during which Kuwait was occupied by the Iraqi army, and the ruler of the country and the remnants of the army fled to Saudi Arabia, the UN adopted resolutions 680 and 681, demanded the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and the restoration of the country's sovereignty, and also imposed a complete embargo on Iraq. Despite this, the Iraqi authorities ignored the demand.

Soon, after vain attempts to force Iraq to comply with the adoption of resolution number 688, an ultimatum was put forward to Iraq: they were given a month and a half to withdraw troops. 30 November, Iraq rejected the ultimatum. This was the starting point for the start of Operation Desert Storm.

On January 17, 1991, the troops of the international coalition launched an operation to liberate Kuwait. On February 24 of the same year, Kuwait was liberated and restored as a sovereign state, and on February 28 a ceasefire was announced.

The failure of the Iraqi army is often explained by the fact that the forces of the multinational coalition struck not in the direction of Kuwait near the coastline, but to the west, in the desert on the border with Saudi Arabia.

Coalition losses, according to general data, did not exceed 25,000 people wounded and killed, while Iraqi losses, declared by the country's minister of war, amounted to about 20,000 killed and 60,000 wounded. (Western media, shortly thereafter, stated larger numbers, up to 200,000 total casualties)

The consequences of the war were numerous uprisings in the northern territories of Iraq, the country suffered heavy economic losses, and under Resolution 687, many chemical weapons have been destroyed.

Since 1991, February 26 of each year is celebrated in Kuwait as the day of liberation from Iraqi occupation.

I was in the U.S. Air Force at this time and loaded weapons on to jets for this operation. This is a song about something I was involved with. Gives you a strange feeling when it's about something you were involved with. Always thanks to Sabaton.
