Winged Hussars
Sabaton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the winged hussars arrived

A cry for help in time of need, await relief from holy league
60 days of siege, outnumbered and weak
Sent a message to the sky, wounded soldiers left to die
Will they hold the wall or will the city fall

Dedication
Dedication
They're outnumbered 15 to one
And the battle's begun

Then the winged hussars arrived
Coming down the mountainside
Then the winged hussars arrived
Coming down they turned the tide

As the days are passing by and as the dead are piling high
No escape and no salvation
Trenches to explosive halls are buried deep beneath the walls
Plant the charges there and watch the city fear

Desperation
Desperation
It's a desperate race against the mine
And a race against time

Then the winged hussars arrived
Coming down the mountainside
Then the winged hussars arrived
Coming down they turned the tide

Cannonballs are coming down from the sky
Janissaries are you ready to die?
We will seek our vengeance eye for an eye

You'll be stopped upon the steps of our gate
On this field you're only facing our hate
But back home the sultan's sealing your fate

We remember
In September
That's the night Vienna was freed
We made the enemy bleed!

Storm clouds, fire and steel
Death from above make their enemy kneel

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sabaton's Winged Hussars describe the events surrounding the Siege of Vienna in 1683, where European forces were being besieged by Ottoman Turks. The first verse highlights the situation where the defenders of Vienna were fatigued and outnumbered, sending a "cry for help in time of need" to the Holy League, awaiting relief. Despite the enemy's overwhelming numbers, the defenders refused to give in, taking refuge in the city walls as the wounded were left to die. The question posed by the verse is whether the defenders would be able to hold on or if the city would fall to the Ottomans.

The chorus of the song is where the hussars make their appearance. The winged hussars were a type of cavalry that had become renowned for their skill and bravery in battle. When they arrived, they charged down the mountainside like a divine intervention, turning the tide of the battle in favor of the defenders. The second verse describes the ongoing struggle between the two sides as bombs and explosives were being thrown by the besieged.

The bridge evokes feelings of desperation as the Ottomans make their final push towards the city, using cannons and other weapons to try and bring down the walls. The winged hussars are called upon once again to protect the city, charging fiercely towards the invading army. In the final lines of the song, the hussars remind the Ottomans of their monumental loss, where the enemy bled and were defeated.

Can you please make a song for the hundred thousands of Russian soldiers who died for the liberation of Balkan countries from the Ottoman control ?
I mean, look at the independence wars of Serbia and Greece and Bulgaria and Romania and half of Ukraine, Russia sent always soldiers to liberate these countries.
Even Armenia and Georgia were under Persian control, but we liberated them .
Here are some useful links for you sir 👇:
