Cars
Sad Song Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Too many screamers
Wearing a mask
Too many dreamers
Looking for the ones that last

Too many eyes
Looking for hope
Too many tears
Looking for a way to cope
It's no joke

It's just a sad song
That pulls you along yeah
It's just a sad song
And it won't take long

Too many thoughts
Breaking your stride
Too many jekylls
Feeling like a mr. hyde

Too many clouds
Darken your day
Too many rain drops
Falling on your thunder bay
Everyday
Yeah

It's just a sad song
That pulls you along yeah
It's just a sad song
And you're getting it on

It's just a sad song
That pulls you along
It's just a sad song
And it won't take long

Too many heartaches
Waiting to strike
Too many clowns
Saying everything's all right

Too many fires
Scorching your mind
Too many preachers
Saying what you should find
Just see the signs

It's just a sad song
That pulls you along yeah
It's just a sad song
And it won't take long

It's just a sad song
It pulls you along
It's just a sad song
And it won't take long

It's just a sad song
A sad song yeah

It's just a sad song
And you're getting it on

It's just a sad song
Sad song

It's just a sad song
And it won't take long

Overall Meaning

The song "Cars" by Sad Song is a reflection on the overwhelming amount of pain and struggles in life that individuals face on a daily basis. The lyrics suggest the presence of too many "screamers" and "dreamers," all searching for something more substantial than what they currently have. The song emphasizes the painful realities of life, such as heartbreak and fear, indicating that there are "too many heartaches waiting to strike."

The chorus reiterates the central theme of the song - it's just a sad song that pulls you along. It showcases how people are almost forced to ride a wave of emotions, sometimes even against their wishes. Despite the darkness, the song doesn't leave listeners feeling hopeless, instead, it acknowledges that sadness is part of the human experience, and it won't take long to feel better.

The song could be interpreted as a reminder that everyone faces sadness at some point. It also highlights the value of being able to acknowledge negative emotions rather than trying to bury them or pretend they don't exist. Choosing to face them head-on can ultimately lead people to healing and growth.

This is my favorite off "Move Like This." It is SUCH a cars album, like the guys' love letter to the fans. Ric and Ben are gone, but the Cars' sound is immortal, at least to me.

I just couldn’t listen to this until now. Too hard without Ben. I was glad they chose not to replace him, very respectable. An incredible band full of all talented musicians. I’m so proud to be from Boston and these guys will always be a big part of our teenage years.

This album grows. The more I listen to it the more genius it becomes. Ric Ocasek left us with some of his best work.

Fred Hollins

Sad that this album didn't sell more copies. It is really good.

Urganite

I didn't find out about it until two days ago. Pretty hilarious considering The Cars are my favorite band from the 70's/80's.

+Fred Hollins The radio stations never played any of the new stuff. The only reason I knew about the album when it came out in 2011 was because of their appearance on Jimmy Fallon at the time.

New Areopagus

The trouble with radio stations playing this song is that The Cars are only played on classic rock stations, and this is not classic rock since it is new. It's also not played on modern rock stations because they tend to lean toward more modern-sounding rock (and this sounds like the 80s), and The Cars are typically not played on any modern rock stations. As for pop stations, The Cars have been characterized as a pop band before, but they're not pop pop enough to be played on those stations. So the end result unfortunately is no one knows this wonderful song.
