1) Safer is the new creative vehicle from Mattie Safer, vocalist and bassist of Poolside and The Rapture.
The music returns to the sound he's best known for – his energetic, driving bass lines and distinctive vocal were a bedrock of The Rapture's first two albums – while incorporating a powerful, soulful vocal delivery and a well honed pop sensibility that reflects his growth over the past decade.
2) Safer began as a recording project in 2005, when founding members Joseph Constantine and Andy Ruggles began collaborating on songs left over from previously imploded projects. The project took form from the many varying musical influences of it's creators.
Constantine came to Seattle from Florida, where he grew up listening to everything from David Bowie and Jeff Buckley, to The Jesus Lizard and Braniac. Being a first chair trumpet player all through school, Constantine was quite familiar with musical performance. And after moving to Seattle and picking up a guitar, he started spending all of his free time writing and recording his own songs.
Andy Ruggles grew up in the suburbs of Seattle, detached from the buzz of creativity that the city provides. Ruggles discovered the "Seattle Sound" in the 90's and began playing guitar with high school chum Mike Lorenzi playing drums, who would later become Safer's bassist. The two formed and broke up countless bands, eventually parting ways for a few years, and in 2005, Ruggles formed a new project.
Looking for a solid vocalist, Ruggles took out an ad in the local weekly paper. Safer came together after Constantine answered the ad and laid down vocal tracks for a few songs Ruggles had recorded. The songs were rough, but the contrast of Constantine's romantic croonings over Ruggles' guitar driven jams sparked the fire of inspiration in the two of them, and they began collaborating on what would become Safer's self-titled debut EP, released in 2006.
Over the next two years, following the curse of line-up changes and halted recording sessions, Ruggles called on Mike Lorenzi to fill the bassist role. With ex-Optimus Rhyme beat-smith Tim Carter joining up on the drums, Safer quickly finished their second release "Now You Turn On" in 2008 and forged ahead for the first time with a solid roster.
2009 has seen the band take their sound to the stage all around the Seattle club circuit, and in November, the band released their third EP "EnormousheadpinheadhearT".

Safer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're in my head
This is where the end begins
Thoughts are all you've said
Think too hard
And real, real loud
The mind will do you in
With some real-time initiative
Laying down no one wins
So I'm gonna love you instead
Tap then drain
All the heart that's left in my veins
Stew and waste about
What my great men meant
When they say
Give it away give it a day
So I'm gonna love you instead
The opening lines of Safer's song Skin create a very intriguing setup for the following lyrics. The phrase "Try to touch some skin" hints at an intimate moment between two people, where one person is possibly trying to make a connection with the other. As the song progresses, we learn more about the mental state of the person singing. It seems they are struggling with their thoughts and are finding it hard to take action, perhaps because they are overthinking things. The line "Thoughts are all you've said" suggests that they may be stuck in their head and are not expressing themselves fully, leading to a feeling of being stuck in a state of inaction.
The phrase "Tap then drain all the heart that's left in my veins" expresses a sense of weariness or exhaustion, as though the person singing has been giving of themselves so much that they are now depleted. They may be reflecting on what their mentors or role models have taught them, but are unable to put these lessons into practice. The final line of the song, "So I'm gonna love you instead," feels like a turning point. The person singing has recognized that their thoughts and worries are overwhelming them, but they have found a way to break free from this cycle, and that is through love. By redirecting their energy towards showing love for someone else, they are able to break out of their own mental trap and begin to take action.
Overall, Skin is a song that touches on themes of overthinking, exhaustion, and finding the courage to take action. Through its introspective lyrics, it encourages listeners to reflect on their own thought patterns and find ways to break out of negative cycles.

Really nice to have some good bands back - brings back old memories to when I used to listen to a bunch of "emo" post hardcore stuff. These dudes have a great mix of power, melodies and mainstream potential as they are not too "emo" :)
