1) Safire, born Wilma Cosme in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a New York City freestyle singer-songwriter who has been one of the Freestyle genre's most popular female performers. She started her singing career as a session vocalist. An audition for the Cutting Records label broke her into the mainstream. She had successful run of classic 80s pop singles such as "Don't Break My Heart", "Let Me Be the One", "Boy I've Been Told", and "Thinking of You". After her sophomore album "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", her career stalled a bit over the 90s as other genres eclipsed freestyle, but she has continued to tour to a base of loyal fans. She released her third album, "Atrevida", a Salsa album in 1996. Safire's fourth album "Bringing Back the Groove" released in 2001 brought her back to the charts with the hits "Don't Break My Heart 2002" and a Freestyle rendition of the New Edition hit "Can You Stand The Rain. Her most recent single is the hit Dance song, "Exotique." Visit http://www.myspace.com/safiresofficialpage Safire's official MySpace.

Safire Lyrics

Let me be the one
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
You don't believe that my love is true
Going to be by my side, baby
So why don't you come and stay with me
Love me, baby and touch me all over
You gotta give me the loving I need
Open your heart, your mind, your soul
Let me be the light, the sun of your dreams
Let me be the one, baby
Stay with you tonight
Giving you all my lovin'
Oh, it can be so
Let me be the one, baby
You give your love too
Let me be the one
Oh, it can be so right
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
You let me when
You opened my heart and inspired my needs
Stop, take what you want from me
So why don't you come and stay with me
Love me, baby and touch me all over
You gotta give me the loving I need
Open your heart, your mind, your soul
Let me be the light, the sun of your dreams
Let me be the one, baby
Stay with you tonight
Giving you all my lovin'
Oh, it can be so
Let me be the one, baby
You give your love too
Let me be the one
Oh, it can be so right
Let me be the one, baby
Stay with you tonight
Giving you all my lovin'
Oh, it can be so
Let me be the one, baby
You give your love too
Let me be the one
Oh, it can be so right
Let me be the one, baby
Stay with you tonight
Giving you all my lovin'
Oh, it can be so
Let me be the one, baby
You give your love too
Let me be the one
Oh, it can be so right
Safire's song Let Me Be the One is about the singer's desire to have the person they love believe in them and their love. The lyricist expresses the desire to be the one that their partner chooses to stay with and love. The singer describes that they have opened their heart and been vulnerable but their partner still doubts their love. The singer pleads with their partner to come to stay with them and accept their love. The singer is asking to be loved wholly, with heart, mind and soul. They describe themselves as the light, the sun of their partner's dream. In conclusion, the lyrics convey the singer's desire to prove their love and be the one their partner chooses to love.

She made this song when popular music was free to express itself. This is why I say the decade of the 1980s was the golden age of Pop music (and not only because I lived it). It was free to experiment with rhythms, styles, timbres, and it had real feeling. It wasn't ME music, it was US music — US as in you, me, family, friends, everyone, let's get together and feel good with this music! It was music you felt good about sharing with others. (I hope this makes at least a LITTLE sense.)
Today's cookie cutter music is all the same. It is dull, non-expressive, doesn't experiment with anything, and is mostly politically motivated. And it comes from the music grinder factories in Hollywood, New York City, Nashville, Chicago, Miami, etc. It all sounds the same, it feels the same, it looks and smells the same, etc. Today's post-aPOPalyptic (what I call it) "music" sounds like a bunch of loose screws and nuts someone threw into a blender. It's not something I would feel good about sharing.
There are a few shining tunes and artists here and there, mostly from independent labels, but they are the exceptions that prove the rule. Independent artists are just that... Independent. They don't feel constrained by the cookie cutter factories who say every artist must adhere to their so-called musical "standards," which really aren't more than a jumbled mass of gobbledegook. These independent artists are a breath of sweet, fresh air. They are as if the 1980s were trying to break through the walls of razor wire and electric fences and give us something good to feel about again, something to love and share and get those warm, honest, giddy feelings about.
Gives us back our feel-good music. Give us back our 80s tunes!
(A thought: I see the parallels now. The way our parents felt about their 50s and 60s music is now how we feel about our 80s and 90s music. I know, I'm dating myself, but we must all grow up sometime {why?}. It doesn't mean, however, that I must give up MY music!)
<If you made it all the way to the end, I thank you for reading. 👍 If you didn't make it this far, I thank you anyway. 🤪
