The Runaway
Saga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Crash and burn
I know that it's not over yet
Live and learn
By living on the internet

[Chorus:]
Don't look now
I think we're on a runaway
Everybody's riding on a runaway

Smack the mouse
Someone's trying to take it all
Burn the house
I better get a fire wall

[Chorus:]

If you think it's crazy
You know you're not alone

[Chorus:]

Can't you see
It doesn't matter where you are
Get it free
I do it with a CDR

Don't look now
I think we're on a runaway
Everybody's riding on a runaway

If you think it's crazy?
You know you're not alone
And don't you think it's crazy?
You know you're not alone

And you won't be riding along

XML
SRC and DVD
What the hell
It's digital insanity!

Don't look now
I think we're on a runaway
Everybody's riding on a runaway

If you think it's crazy?
You know you're not alone
And don't you think it's crazy?
You know you're not alone

And you won't be riding alone

Overall Meaning

The song "The Runaway" by Saga is a reflection on our dependence on technology and how that can ultimately lead to us feeling out of control. The opening lines, "Crash and burn, I know that it's not over yet, live and learn by living on the internet" set the tone for the song as a cautionary tale of what happens when we become too dependent on technology. The chorus, "Don't look now, I think we're on a runaway, everybody's riding on a runaway" reinforces this idea, in that we are all swept up in this wave of technological progress, often without fully understanding the consequences.

The verses highlight specific examples of our dependence on technology, such as "Smack the mouse, someone's trying to take it all, burn the house, I better get a fire wall". These lines address the vulnerability that comes with using technology, and how easy it is for our personal information to be compromised. The line "I do it with a CDR" shows the ease with which we can copy and share information, which can be both a blessing and a curse.

The bridge of the song, which references "XML, SRC and DVD" is a nod to the complexity of technology and how overwhelming it can be. The lyrics, "what the hell, it's digital insanity" acknowledge the madness that can come from trying to keep up with ever-changing technology.

Overall, the song is a warning about the potential dangers of technology, urging us to be mindful of how much control we give to these devices.

Perhaps their most beautiful yet haunting song ever. The layers of etheric and spiritual sounds are just too gorgeous to resist. It verges on being the most perfecty and beautifully arranged song in the history of all songs.
