Wind Him Up
Saga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aldo's standing at his table
And he's wondering if he's able
To pick the number right this time
He watches as the wheel stops spinning
Sees the number that is winning
As he reaches for his glass of wine
Once he starts it's hard to stop
He's keeping up a pace like a tight wound clock
Be sure you don't step in his way
He'll keep those numbers rolling
This may be his last day

As all the bets are taken
Aldo lights a smoke, he's shaking
From carnation right to the ground
He knows tonight holds one last chance
And give the wheel a final glance
Slippery fingers drop the money down
Once he starts it's hard to stop
He's keeping up a pace like a tight wound clock
And as he leaves the table, "No luck today"
You can rest assured
He's coming back to try again

Wind him up, he can't stop
He's wound up tight just like the clock
That's winding its second hand down
Wind him up, he can't stop
He keeps on going 'round the clock
He's winding his second hand down

Wind him up, he can't stop
He's wound up tight just like the clock
That's winding its second hand down
Wind him up, he can't stop
He keeps on going 'round the clock
He's winding his second hand down

Wind him up, he can't stop
He's wound up tight just like the clock
That's winding its second hand down
Wind him up, he can't stop

He keeps on going 'round the clock
He's winding his second hand down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Saga's song "Wind Him Up" depict the story of Aldo, a compulsive gambler who can't resist the temptation to play and win. The song starts with Aldo standing at a table and contemplating whether he will be able to pick the right number this time. As the wheel stops spinning, he sees the number that is winning and reaches for his glass of wine, indicating his sense of relaxation and satisfaction. However, as he starts playing, it's hard for him to stop. He keeps up with the pace like a tight wound clock, and if someone gets in his way, it could be hazardous for them.

The second verse shows Aldo getting anxious as all the bets are taken. He lights a smoke to calm himself, but he's shaking from carnation right to the ground. He knows that tonight holds one last chance for him to win and gives the wheel a final glance before slippery fingers drop the money down. The chorus repeats the phrase "wind him up," emphasizing Aldo's obsession with gambling and his inability to resist it. The phrase "he's winding his second hand down" means that his time is running out, or his luck is about to run out.

The theme of the song lies in the consequences of excessive gambling and how it can consume a person's life. The lyrics depict Aldo as someone who is obsessed with winning and addicted to the thrill of gambling, to the extent that he can't stop himself from winding up tight like a clock.

Drove to Florida and heard this song on Sirius radio (Canadian rock channel) and OMG!!! I listened to it on blue tooth so many more times on you tube after that. It is incredible. So much energy in the riffs. It also sounded so good on my car audio system. Better than most songs. This was my theme song for the trip I will never forget.
