Rockaway Beach
Sahara Hotnights Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The sun is out and I want some
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
Up on the roof, out on the street
Down in the playground the hot concrete
Bus ride is too slow
Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach [Repeat; x 2]
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
It's not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach
The lyrics of Sahara Hotnights' cover of The Ramones' "Rockaway Beach" describe the singer's desire for a fun, sun-soaked day at the beach. The song opens with the sound of someone chewing bubble gum, which sets a carefree tone from the start. The singer states that they want to enjoy the sun, and Rockaway Beach seems like the perfect place to do so. The song emphasizes that the beach is easily accessible and can be reached with a simple hitchhiking adventure.
As the song progresses, the singer describes various settings where people might gather and have fun, such as on the roof or in the playground. However, the singer ultimately concludes that the beach is the best place to be by repeating the chorus to "Rockaway Beach," encouraging everyone to come join in the fun.
The lyrics suggest that the beach is an escape from the mundane and sometimes frustrating aspects of daily life. The joy and freedom described in the song are essential themes of punk rock music, and the song's upbeat melody matches the energetic and carefree atmosphere of the beach that the singer is so eager to get to.
