On July 1, 2009, Said the Whale released the EP The Magician to drum up anticipation for the release of their second full-length album Islands Disappear on October 13, 2009.
In the spring of 2011, Said the Whale toured the U.S. for the first time. During this time they were the subject of the CBC documentary "Winning America" directed by Brent Hodge and Thomas Buchan. The movie documented the band's trip and performances along the West Coast of North America on their way to and from Austin, Texas' SXSW Music Festival and culminated when Said the Whale won the Juno Award for New Group of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards. The documentary aired on July 23, 2011, in British Columbia, and on April 7, 2012, across Canada.
They released their EP New Brighton on November 8, 2011, in preparation for their third full-length album, Little Mountain, released internationally on March 6, 2012.
In early 2012, the band was awarded a spot on the Canadian music magazine Rockstar Weekly's list of the "Top 12 RockStars to Watch in 2012". The list also included Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, and Rush. The band performed at the Sasquatch! Music Festival in 2012 and 2013.

Fans could stream the whole album on a personalized, private SoundCloud account from the 10th until the 15th of March without leaking or sharing the link. From the 15th until the 26th of March, the fans could invite their friends to listen to the album in a "listening party" in order to promote it but still not sharing the link to the album, keeping it strictly limited to those who were sent the link.

Loveless

Hints in the subtle sounds
Never spoken aloud
I loved the idea of it
But without significance
It could be delicate
And I always mean what I say
How could I love you less
It's just a question that I still don't have the answer for
How could I love you less Now that I know you more?
If there was a choice
Given the choice between theirs and mine
I'd take the comfort of comfort every single time
How could I love you less
Now that I know you more
So passing the time away
Without remembering anything
And learning all your intricacies
You, back to the city life
Softer spoken, kind
Seeing things in a different light
And I always mean what I say
Back in our younger days
(We were younger then)
We were locked away
(We were just starting out)
We were just starting out
You used to hold me close
(I still hold you close)
You're so dear to me
(You're still dear to me)
Now we're comfortable
Never too comfortable
These lyrics are from the song 'Loveless' by Said The Whale, which is about the singer's reflection on their relationship with their partner. The song highlights the idea that love is a complex emotion that can change over time and can be fragile without clear communication. The singer admits that they liked the idea of their relationship but were unsure whether it had any significance. They express that they always mean what they say, and they ask themselves how they could love their partner any less now that they know more about them.
The song also explores the idea of comfort and the singer's choice of it. They reveal that if they had to choose between their comfort and their partner's, they would always choose their own, suggesting a degree of selfishness. Nevertheless, they still love their partner and are willing to learn more about them, including their intricacies. The song also shows how the passing of time can change people and relationships, as the singer reflects on how their partner has become softer spoken and sees things differently now that they have moved back to the city.
In summary, 'Loveless' by Said The Whale presents a thoughtful and introspective take on love and relationships, highlighting the importance of communication and the power dynamics at play.
