Pan Am 009
Saint Privat Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where in the unasked question
Answer lies
Is she,
Ain't she
High on some gemed enamelry
Is she one of those creatures
I guess
It must be
Some sort of
Lucy in the sky?
PAN AM flight number 009
She's the girl that serves
You lobster and wine
Is she
Ain't she
Wishing you a very pleasant flight
Or maybe does she want to have you
For the night?
I guess
It must be
A girl named
Lucy in the sky?
The lyrics of Saint Privat’s song “Pan Am 009” capture the spirit of a journey on a luxurious Pan American Airways flight, which was once the epitome of air travel elegance. The opening lines about the “sparking eyes” suggest that the singer is intrigued by a woman on the flight who is asking a question without words. The “Answer lies” in her eyes. The following lines express doubt about whether she is a person of luxurious taste or under the influence of drugs like “gemed enamelry” which could make her seem more sophisticated than she really is.
The chorus mentions the flight number (Pan Am 009) and the woman serving lobster and wine as an attendant. The singer wonders whether she is just being polite to the passengers or whether she is interested in taking one of them for the night. The last lines about “Lucy in the sky” suggest a playful reference to the Beatles classic “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” which was rumored to be about the effects of taking LSD. The singer wonders if the woman is high on drugs, imitating the same alluring vision of diamond-like brilliance that LSD was said to induce in users.
Overall, the lyrics of “Pan Am 009” perfectly capture the glamour and intrigue of flying with one of the world’s most iconic airlines in the 1960s and 1970s. It also captures the free-spirited nature of the times, taking innocent pleasure from imagining the possibility of an illicit encounter on an extravagant flight.
