Oldfield and her siblings were raised in the Roman Catholic faith of their mother, Maureen. After spending her childhood partly in Dublin and then partly in Reading, Berkshire, Oldfield joined the Royal Academy of Dancing at the age of twelve to study ballet dancing. She quit dancing only four years later.
Oldfield's musical career started in 1968 when she co-founded the folk duo The Sallyangie together with brother Mike Oldfield. The group recorded their first and only album at the recommendation of the Pentangle guitarist, John Renbourn. The sound of the album, Children of the Sun recorded in 1969, was a fairy-tale blend of English folk and pop, with Sally's vocals taking center-stage. Guesting with The Sallyangie on their first recording were Terry Cox, noted drummer/percussionist of Pentangle, as well as flutist Ray Warleigh, who also played with Allan Holdsworth, Nick Drake and many others. Sally and Mike split up in the autumn of the same year due to artistic differences, and Sally and Mike went their own ways for a time.
Oldfield's first solo album release was Water Bearer, released in 1978. Since then, she has continued to release solo albums, as well as appearing on several albums of her siblings Mike and Terry. She was one of the singers performing the female chorus in a couple of sections of Tubular Bells, in the climax of part one and just before the Scottish tune in part two.
Marlene
Sally Oldfield Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Marlene, my love, you were born too soon
Running his fingers through her hair
Across her face to her lips so fine
He said, "Another place, another time, you could be mine"
Marlene, if I could have you here like that
Let one dream in my life come true
But the hands of time just won't turn back
And I wish you all the best Marlene
If he only had the chance to be in her movie scene
He would show her how to love, Marlene
He would be her leading man in the truest love story
Anyone in the world had seen
It's the flower in her soul
In her eyes she holds
And she'll always be his queen
Marlene, if I could have you here like that
Let one dream in my life come true
But the hands of time just won't turn back
So what remains is just my dream
And I wish you all the best
Marlene if I could have you here like that
Let one dream in my life come true
But the hands of time just won't turn back
So what remains is just my dream
And I wish you all the best Marlene
The lyrics of Sally Oldfield's "Marlene" depict a man's admiration for Marlene, a woman he seemingly cannot have. The song is filled with longing and regret, as the singer reminisces on what could have been if only circumstances were different. The man is clearly enamored by Marlene's beauty and is deeply upset that fate has prevented them from being together. As he watches her move across the room, he thinks about how different things could have been if she were born in another time. He yearns to touch her hair and kiss her lips, but he knows that the hands of time cannot be turned back.
The lyrics of the second verse reveal that the man is so taken with Marlene that he has dreams of being her leading man in a love story. He wants to show her how to love and to be the truest love she has ever known. He believes that Marlene is a queen, and he will always see her as such. In the end, the man resigns himself to the fact that he cannot have Marlene, and all he can do is wish her the best.
