I Hate You
Saltillo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Matthew 4:16)
The people living in darkness have seen a Great Light.

(...) and every girl are afraid of being laughed at, you are afraid of being talked about, you are afraid of being at school... because don't want to be laughed at.

(Laughing)

You know something? I hate you.

(Jeremiah 17:9)
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

I have found out what God wants you to do.

I sincerely hope that as a result of this assembly this high school will be a better high school.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

You know something? I hate you.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Saltillo's "I Hate You" are a biblical reference to Matthew 4:16, a verse that speaks of hope for those living in darkness. But the hope is short-lived as the lyrics dive into the harsh reality of teenage life. The verse "every girl is afraid of being laughed at" highlights the insecurity that is all too common among young people. However, the focus quickly turns to the subject of the song, "you". Someone who is afraid of being talked about and ridiculed at school. But even in the midst of their struggle, the singer boldly declares "I hate you" with a sense of bitterness and resentment.

The following lines from Jeremiah 17:9 further explain the singer's animosity. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" This verse speaks to the dark side of human nature, suggesting that the subject of the song is not to be trusted. The singer has a sense of knowing the truth behind the subject's façade, and it is not a flattering truth. The mention of God's desire for the subject's life adds an interesting layer to the lyrics, implying that perhaps the singer has a moral disagreement with the subject's actions.

Overall, "I Hate You" is a song that speaks to the pain and angst of adolescence. It touches on themes such as insecurity, betrayal, and the darker sides of human nature. The title itself is provocative and speaks to the raw emotion that lies beneath the surface of the song.

"The heart is deceitful above all things..." - Jeremiah 17:9 I know that this part of the lyrics is a bible verse, but not much else about the origins. I know that "The people who sat in darkness saw a great light" is also a verse from the bible. It sounds like it's some sort of school assembly where a preacher was called in to talk to the kids. You know, back when it was okay to have that at a school. Great listen. LOVE that banjo, and the foreboding feeling the cello adds behind it.

in a way i agree. the transition will be hell to say it necely. but the best we can do is calm people, make it less daunting. share the information, try to help them, and hope that it will go in the right direction. Paradise or Oblivion (the new vid) puts it pretty simply, and i find that sharing with people is productive :) Be Respectful -Bridget
