I'd been sick for the last three days
I have been physically unwell for the past seventy-two hours

Laid out in a deep flu haze

I consumed high amounts of caffeine and over-the-counter pain medication

Pulled me together for New Year's Eve
This combination helped me feel well enough to attend the New Year's Eve celebrations

We were lucky to have a sitter
We were fortunate to have found someone to watch our child for the night

And, baby, you know I'm not a quitter
I am not one to easily give up or cancel plans

Plus we'd promised her twice her pay
We had already committed to paying the sitter double her regular rate

And she was going to get it whether we went or we stayed
We intended to honor our commitment to pay the sitter even if we decided not to go out for the night

So in the only suit I own
I wore the only formal outfit that I had

I watched you pull your dress on
I observed you putting on your formal attire

I said, "Eldridge," when the cabbie asked, "Where you heading?"
I replied with the destination name when the taxi driver asked where we wanted to go

An intimate dinner party for luminaries
We were invited to a private gathering with some influential and successful people

Our table was filled with Tony award winners and the lovers they carried
Our table was occupied by those who had won the prestigious Tony Awards and their romantic partners

I shouted to you, "You look incredible, your skin is glowing."
I exclaimed that you looked amazing, and your skin had a radiant shine

You shouted back, "It's bronzer but thanks for not knowing."
You responded that it was a cosmetic product called bronzer that gave the glow, and thanked me for the compliment anyway

In the unisex bathroom I pulled you close for a kiss
We shared an intimate moment and kissed inside a gender-neutral restroom

'Cause you're the only thing in this world I can't resist
I cannot resist your love and affection

And when we get old we're going to remember this
We will cherish and reminisce about this moment in our old age

When the ball dropped fifty blocks uptown
At the stroke of midnight, the New Year's Eve ball descended down a pole fifty blocks north of our location

We were off by forty seconds with our countdown
We miscounted and were not precisely in sync with the official countdown

But everything's relative and our 3, 2, 1 felt real
Despite being off by a few seconds, our countdown still felt genuine and significant to us

We can only believe the things we feel
Our emotions and perceptions shape our understanding of reality

Then it was hugs all around the room
People in the vicinity exchanged embraces to express joy and happiness

While in other sunlit parts of the world, flowers bloomed
While we were celebrating the New Year's Eve in the dark winter, it was daytime in some parts of the world where flowers were blooming

For so many time zones this moment had passed
Due to time differences, the New Year's Eve had already come and gone for many regions and countries

And now it was here but we weren't the last
However, we were not the last ones on Earth to ring in the New Year's Eve

Our friends in L.A. were still getting dressed
Our acquaintances in Los Angeles were still putting on their formal attire for the celebrations

People in Hawaii were still getting disco rest
In Hawaii, some were still sleeping after attending a disco party the night before

Pretending the best but expecting the worst
Although many people appeared to be putting on a brave face, they anticipated the worst

All my life these celebrations have been so poorly rehearsed
Throughout my life, these festive occasions have often been poorly planned and carried out

But when I turned and saw you I realized that this would be a first
However, when I glanced at you, I realized that this celebration was unique and special

You give me balance while you make me unsteady
Your presence in my life brings equilibrium, but at the same time, it makes me feel a bit unsteady

You complicate the world but you make me ready
Although you may make my life more intricate, you also make me better prepared for whatever comes my way

I pulled you across the table for a kiss, 'cause you're the only thing I can't resist
My attraction and love for you are so strong that I had to kiss you while we sat at the dinner table

Jump into a cab on Allen Street
We quickly got into a taxi on Allen Street

Get a glare from the couple we barely beat
We received an unfriendly look from the couple who we narrowly surpassed in getting a taxi ride

Home free twenty blocks away
Our journey home was only twenty blocks away

The Aleve's worn off but I feel okay
Although the pain medication had worn off, I still felt alright

Call the sitter on the cell, everything's fine
I contacted the babysitter using my mobile phone to verify that everything was alright

Our daughter went straight to sleep, sitter had a glass of wine
Our daughter went to bed without any issues, and the babysitter had a glass of wine to celebrate New Year's Eve

Tell her we're almost there, she says, "Take your time."
I informed the babysitter that we were close to home, and she replied that we should not rush

So the taxi keeps driving while I give you a kiss
While in the taxi, I kissed you again

You are the one thing in my life that I desire and cannot resist

And this is one of those moments I'm so glad we didn't miss
I am grateful that we did not miss this moment and got to experience it together

When everything we've always wanted is right there in the palm of our fists
We have everything that we have always wanted right in our hands

You are my sole goal and resolution, and I do not need anything else to achieve happiness

And when we get old we're going to remember this
We will look back and recall fond memories of this night as we age
