Well for one he is frying (basically using your throat to vibrate your vocal cords like this guy is doing), he's actually screaming, also known as Power Exhales, (legitimately screaming by primarily using your diaphragm, and chest, only using your throat to control the amount of air you're letting out, and then contouring your mouth and tongue to manipulate resonance). , Frying in a way that sounds good still takes a little while to sound good at and do properly. Garris's particular technique can be extremely damaging on your vocal cords if you don't do it correctly. It takes years to be able to comfortably scream but the payoff is way better in the long run.

My advice, try starting to scream and mimic the sound of bands like Dance Gavin Dance and older Senses Fail, then work your way from that "neutral" sound into doing highs and lows.

If you want a good example of the difference:
Fry vocalists: Dan Watson, Dickie Allen, and Alex Kohler

Power Exhales: Austin Dickey, Alex Terrible, Tyler Shelton, The guys from "Strangled"

They have very similar sounding styles but you can tell the difference in technique, power, and but most noticeably volume. Especially when you watch them perform live or watch any of their videos where they demonstrate without any music around them.

Kardavox Academy is a good channel for beginning to teach yourself but he primarily teaches fry techniques. Again, nothing wrong with that but I think the ability to do power exhales is far more versatile and frying leaves a lot to be desired.

Just my two cents.

tbnbfm

@Extreme Vocal Institute it is normal to feel a little bit of "burning" in the throat while doing this? Can it be done also in chest voice?

Extreme Vocal Institute

@tbnbfm you shouldn’t be feeling any burning, it can be done in chest or head voice just depends on your personal range and where the notes sit for you and what’s most comfortable

tbnbfm

@Extreme Vocal Institute really ? Neither after doing it for like two hours? Btw thank you man. How can I fix it?
