The talented singer/songwriter spent that year a special guest on the sold-out Overtones UK tour, playing at prestigious venues including the London Palladium and performing to some 40,000 people. His album Brighter Day wound its way in the Top 10 singer/songwriter albums on iTunes and his fan base continues to grow each day thanks to radio support from more than 40 stations. He was also the subject of a Channel 4 TV documentary, and topped it off with a mammoth tour of over 70 Caffe Nero outlets nationwide.
In the summer of 2012, Sam has shifted to a more soulful sound. His single, ‘This Girl’ released in August, doffed its cap to classic Motown, blue-eyed soul and general good-time intelligent pop. With over a quarter of a million YouTube views, it seems the general public is loving his slight bend in musical direction. And there’s more to come. Think Otis Redding meets the more ballad-driven strains of Elvis Costello with a dash of the Style Council and you’re getting there.
Born and raised in Hull, Sam grew up playing in bands on Humberside before slowly gravitating across the M62 to Manchester, which remains his base to this day. Whilst in Manchester he was discovered by legendary drummer Steve White (Paul Weller, The Who, Oasis) who became his manager, producer and general overseer. White, along with his team secured Sam a publishing deal with Notting Hill Music and a recording contract with the Transmission Recordings label. He also got Sam in the studio with highly sought after producer, Brendan Lynch (Weller as well as Primal Scream and Ocean Colour Scene).
As well as performing and generally playing a star-in-waiting, Sam is also an accomplished writer having crafted tunes for The Voice and Hollyoaks star Abi Phillips. At the time of writing he is very much a songwriter in demand.
Sam is currently the special guest on Peter Andre’s ‘Up Close and Personal’ tour which began in mid-November and spans over 30 dates nationwide. It is sure to open up Sam to a new audience and cement his reputation as one of the UK’s up and coming premium live acts.
A new single will coincide with the Andre tour with a brand new album, Too Much Of A Good Thing released on 4 February 2013. Like ‘This Girl’, the album has definite echoes of Motown and soul, kicked through with modern textures and a contemporary feel. It is set to be one of the defining releases of next year’s first quarter.

One night stand

The way you move your body set my heart alight
Before I got your name, we went out the door
I ask you now my friends
Why it always ends in one night stand
Is it a danger
Some kind of lever in my head
Making me climb into your bed
I don't even know her
I don't remember what I'd say
Too much wine, I crossed the lines
I tried to stop myself this time
But here I go
I leave a manifestation
On the road
But that's not really me, no
Now I know
I've been living with my heart is broken
Ever since you let go of my hand
My life is one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Amy was a red hot lover (lover)
Katy want to walk the isle (she want a wedding ring)
Jody want to be my mother (my mother)
Makes me want to run a mile (I wanna run away)
Weekly at my hands
But it always seems to end in one night stand
One night stand
Is it a danger
Some kind of lever in my head
It's taking me over
Making me climb into your bed
I don't even know her
I don't remember what I'd say
Too much wine, I crossed the lines
I tried to stop myself this time
But here I go
I leave a manifestation
On the road
But that's not really me, no
Now I know
I've been living with my heart is broken
Ever since you let go of my hand
My life is one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Here I go
I never meant to leave a manifestation
On the road
But that's not really me, no
Now I know
I've been living with my heart is broken
Ever since you let go of my hand
My life is one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Oh oh, my life is a one night stand
Ever since you let go of my hand
My life is one night stand
The lyrics of Sam Gray's One Night Stand explore the emotions and experiences surrounding casual sex, where the encounter leaves the singer feeling empty and lost. The song begins with the singer meeting a girl in a bar and being enamored by her body's movement. They leave before he even knows her name, and he questions why it always ends in a one night stand. He reflects that it might be a dangerous lever in his head that takes control and leads him to climb into bed with women he doesn't know. He regrets that he crossed the line and got too close, but he cannot seem to stop himself. He continues to see different women weekly, but it always ends in a one night stand.
In the chorus, the singer ponders over his heart being broken, and his life feeling like a one night stand since the girl he truly wants let go of his hand. He laments that he never meant to leave a bad impression on the women he's left behind, but that's not who he is. He then repeats that his life is only a one night stand for him now.
Overall, the song portrays a sad and melancholic tone about a man who indulges in fleeting sexual encounters but yearns for something more substantial - an emotional connection. Despite his remorse, he's stuck in a cycle of one night stands that ultimately leave him feeling hollow and broken-hearted.
