I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God, it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
They say Spain is pretty, though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Oh, Daniel, my brother, you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal?
Your eyes have died, but you see more than I
Daniel, you're a star in the face of the sky
Oh Daniel, my brother, you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal?
Your eyes have died, but you see more than I
Daniel, you're a star in the face of the sky
Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God, it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
God, it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Sam Smith's song "Daniel" is a heartfelt tribute to a brother who is leaving for Spain. The song starts with Smith being able to see his brother, Daniel's, plane take off for Spain, through the red tail lights. Though Smith admits that he has never been to Spain, Daniel says that it is a beautiful place to visit. Smith misses his brother so much and can barely contain his emotions as he watches the plane disappear into the horizon, and it brings tears to his eyes.
The second verse is Smith reflecting on his brother's life and experiences. He wonders if Daniel still feels the pain of the scars that won't heal. He admits that Daniel has seen more than he has, with 'eyes that have died'. Despite this, the singer sees him as a 'star in the face of the sky'. The song returns to the chorus, with the repetition of the "God, it looks like Daniel must be the clouds in my eyes" line.
The song has a very emotional undertone, and the lyrics are thought-provoking, given that anyone can relate when it comes to missing their loved ones. It highlights that the pain is most measurable when your loved ones leave you behind, and you have to face the world. The idea of feeling emotional about someone that is still alive is also very relatable—something that most of us feel quite often.
