On My Own
Samantha Barks(사만다 바크스) Lyrics

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with till morning
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close me eyes
And he has found me
In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is he and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself, and not to him
And although and he is blind
Still I say " there's a way for us"

I love him, but when the night is over
He is gone, the rivers is just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life, I've only been pretending
Without me, this world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him

I love him
But only on my own

Overall Meaning

The song 22. On My Own, sung by Samantha Barks in the movie Les Misérables, is a heart-wrenching tale of unrequited love. The song is a soliloquy in which Eponine, the character played by Barks, bemoans the fact that the man she loves, Marius, is in love with another woman, Cosette. She wanders the streets aimlessly, lost in her own world, pretending that Marius is beside her, enveloped in his love.

Through the lyrics, we get a glimpse of Eponine's mind and her willingness to ignore reality and live in her own world where Marius loves her. She feels his arms around her and imagines him finding her when she's lost. In the rain, the pavement shines like silver, and the lights are misty in the river, highlighting the beauty of the world around her, which she can only see when she is lost in her own thoughts. In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight, and all she can see is Marius and her together forever.

However, she knows that it is only in her mind that she is talking to him and not him. And although Marius is blind to her love, she still believes there's a way for them. Without him, her world turns bleak, and everything changes, and she's left alone, rueing her love. But despite all that, she still loves him, but only on her own.

Overall, the song is a poignant representation of unrequited love, Eponine's longing for Marius' love, and her inability to accept reality. It is a moving soliloquy that captures the beauty of heartbreak and the pain and sorrow of unattainable love.

The genius of "Les Misérables", is in the fact that EVERYONE is miserable: miserable in work, miserable in life, miserable in politics, miserable in the army, and yes.. miserable in love. Eponine's misery is so palpable to anyone on this planet who sought love. We have all been there, and we have all sung this song.

Actually, ‘les misérables’ more closely translates to ‘the wretched’.

“In any case, there is a point where the poor and the wicked become mixed up and lumped together in the one fateful word: Les Misérables (the wretched). Whose fault is this?”

So even the Thénardiers would fall under the umbrella.

That is just so succinct!

Victor Hugo is such an amazing author to wrote this novel where the musical and movie is based.

@THEShogunBallistic

Ya the phantom in my mind told me to check out all the despair today, the despair that provoked others to move towards impacting each other in the worse possible ways. I want to encourage the opposite of that. I think I still have a way to go.
