From (a) way down deep inside
What does this voice, keep saying to me
It says: "pass this affair and pass it wide"
You may be a puzzle, but I like the way the parts fit
Still that little voice says: "Go get your track shoes -put them on and get"
We could go the distance
And find us romance
Your style and your stance
There's only one problem - the tiniest problem
I like to lead when I dance
Your eyes do the speaking
They talk with each glance
My will-power's creaking
I might take a (the) chance
And though you're the charmer - who could bend my armor
I like to lead when I dance
I like to steer the car - whenever I drive
And hold the door ajar - when we arrive
So if it's decided - that this is romance
My sweet, I'll repeat - in advance
I like to lead when I dance
(I like to lead when I dance)
When Adam bit the fruit - as fashions were then
He got that fig-leaf suit - for which Amen
So if it's decided - I'm wearing the pants
Then Eve, I'd say we've - got romance
I like to lead - I set the speed
I like to lead when I dance
(When I dance, when I dance, when I dance)
The lyrics of Sammy's song "I Like It" express the internal conflict of a person who is interested in someone but struggling with letting go of control in the potential relationship. The opening lines reveal the presence of a little voice, which is a metaphor for the conscience or inner voice, that keeps talking to the singer from deep inside. The voice advises the singer to pass the affair, which means to not get involved in a romantic relationship with the other person. However, the singer likes the other person's persistence, style, and stance, which suggests that the other person is charming and compelling.
The singer acknowledges that there is only one problem. They like to lead when they dance, which could suggest that the singer likes to be in control or take the lead in relationships. The other person's eyes do the speaking and talk with each glance, which implies that the other person is expressive and communicative. Despite this, the singer's will-power is creaking and might take a chance with the other person. The singer acknowledges that the other person is a charmer, someone who could break their armor, but they still like to lead when they dance.
The lyrics reveal the singer's desire to be in control, lead the way in the relationship, and set the speed. The reference to Adam and Eve's story and the fig-leaf suit suggests that the singer sees themselves as the leader or dominant partner in the relationship. Overall, the singer is struggling with a deep-seated desire for control and the fear of relinquishing it to someone else.
