Hey There
Sammy Davis Jr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey there you with the stars in your eyes
Love never made a fool of you, you used to be too wise

Hey there you on that high flying cloud
Tho' she won't throw a crumb to you
You think someday she'll come to you

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string, break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear
Are you too much in love to hear
Is it all going in one ear and out the other

Better forget her, her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string, break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear

Are you too much in love to hear
Is it all going in one ear and out the other

Overall Meaning

Sammy Davis Jr's song "Hey There" is a cautionary tale about love and the lengths we go to for the object of our affection. The song starts off with a direct address to someone who seems to be entranced by the stars in their eyes, warning them that love should never make a fool of them. The singer acknowledges that the person used to be wise, indicating that they have lost touch with their sensibilities in the face of intense emotions.

The second verse switches to the subject of the person's infatuation, a woman who is out of reach despite their hopes of an eventual relationship. The singer encourages the person to forget about her and move on, suggesting that they are being manipulated by her. The woman is described as having her nose in the air, implying that she is arrogant and unattainable. The person is depicted as being on a string, dancing to her whims, and the singer warns them that if they break free, she won't care.

The final verse drives the message home by asking the person if they are seeing things clearly or if they are too much in love to hear the singer's advice. The song ends with the question of whether it is all going in one ear and out the other, suggesting that the person is so consumed with their love that they are not listening to reason.

Overall, the lyrics to "Hey There" are a plea for common sense in the face of overwhelming emotions. The singer urges the person to be cautious and not be blinded by love, as it can lead to foolishness and heartbreak. The use of imagery, such as stars and clouds, adds to the dreamlike quality of the song and reinforces the idea that the person is lost in a fantasy.

Hey there
You with the stars in your eyes
Love never made a fool of you
You used to be too wise

Hey there
You on that high-flying cloud
Though she won't throw a crumb to you
You think someday she'll come to you

Better forget her
Her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
Break it and she won't care
