Both Sides Now
Sammy Hagar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's another side to everything
Connected like the ring around your finger
And I know this like I know myself,
Not very well, yet I'm no stranger
But it won't be long, I see both sides now
When nothing's gained, then something's lost
Pay half the price at twice the cost
We're crystallized, we stand alone
Conviction holds us like a stone
I know it won't be long, 'cause I see both sides now
We got to learn how to listen, before we learn to talk
We got to learn how to crawl, befor we learn to walk
If you want a little peace, sometimes you got to fight
We got to walk through the darkness
Before we stand in the light
But I know it won't be long, I see both sides now
We're always somewhere in between
We never taste, the sweet extreme
We're crystallized, we stand alone
Conviction holds us like a stone
I know it won't be long, I see both sides now
We got to learn how to listen, before we learn to talk
You got to learn to crawl, before you learn to walk
If you want a little peace, sometimes you got to fight
You've got to walk through the darkness
Before you stand in the light
I know it won't be long

I see both sides now
Both sides now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sammy Hagar's Both Sides Now explore the idea of there being two sides to everything in life, and the importance of recognizing both sides before coming to a conclusion. Hagar uses metaphors like a ring around a finger and conviction holding us like a stone to highlight the interconnectedness and rigidity of certain beliefs and ideas. He acknowledges that he himself doesn't know everything, but he has come to understand that it's crucial to try to see things from multiple perspectives.

Hagar also touches on the idea of the cost of gaining knowledge, and the inevitable losses that come with it. He suggests that sometimes one needs to fight in order to achieve peace, and that walking through darkness is necessary to reach the light. Ultimately, Hagar concludes that navigating the grey areas between extremes is essential to finding balance and understanding the two sides of any situation.

The song has a reflective and introspective feel to it, encouraging listeners to examine their own beliefs and perspectives. Through poetic language and vivid imagery, Hagar succeeds in delivering a message that is both universal and personal.

This song was written a long ago but, if you listen to the lyrics its the perfect lesson for this 2020 year. Its like he predicted the future. Love this song and Sammy.

This in my opinion is Sammy's best solo album or at least the most diverse. I really like it when he collaborates with multiple musicians.

Pretty hard to beat Standing Hampton.

@toddc3988

@@markunruh2047 Standing Hampton has the most iconic songs. But from beginning to end, Marching to Mars has better material. There is some weaker stiff on the back end of the CD on Hampton (side 2 for us old farts who bought it on vinyl back in the stone age), although I love his Joplin cover to end it. From the first rhythm lick of Little Wire Lie to the face of the title track, nothing is weak on Marching in my unimportant opinion.

@markunruh2047

The bottom line, Sammy kicks ass.
