Chickery Chick
Sammy Kaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once there lived a chicken who would say "chick-chick"
"Chick-chick" all day
Soon that chick got sick and tired of just "chick-chick"
So, one morning he started to say:

[Chorus]
"Chickery-chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?"

Every time you're sick and tired of just the same old thing
Sayin' just the same old words all day
Be just like the chicken who found something new to sing
Open up your mouth and start to say
Oh!

[Chorus]

Until just recently I thought this was a nonsense thing my dad made up ,, but he taught it to me when I was a little girl and I still remembered it after all these years later at age 64

@BabyChili1

Isn’t it precious to have the memories of our youth. My dad sang this to me as well. Never bothered to check out its origin. I’m 54 and still sing it. He also sang a song called “Pickle in the middle” you might have heard that one as well. Makes me smile when I think of him happy to sing these to and with me. Peace ❤

@Nikodymus

I listened to this with my grandma when I was little. At 29, I still love it as much as I did then. If I’m blessed to have children, I’ll be sure to share it with them. : )

@lynnecook3914

My grandma taught her daughters this song, my mom taught me and I taught my daughter. On Christmas my grandma, aunt, my mom, my daughter and I sang it.

My mother is 92. She has been singing this song. She doesn't remember where she learned it but my cousin found it on her phone and played it for her.

It's how we won the war. No other country has been blessed with music and humor like ours; and it gets us through everything!

@muffs55mercury61

When this came out, most of the boys who survived the war were finally home. I'm sure the mood was happy when listening to this song. I still have my dad's 78.
Unlike many bands that soon broke up, Sammy's band survived and prospered during the post war years, having hits thru 1953 and came back 11 years later and had "Charade".

@melindasingleton1380

My dad use to sing this all the time. ❤️❤️
