The singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and producer, born Sampha Sisay, started making music in his early teenage years. In 2009, the South London native broke through with a remix of the xx's "Basic Space," which led to a busy schedule across 2010 and 2011. This period entailed collaborations with SBTRKT, Jessie Ware, and Lil Silva, as well as a solo debut with Sundanza, an EP issued on the Young Turks label. After a less eventful 2012, the following year Sampha was featured on Drake's "Too Much" and Beyoncé's "Mine," and issued Dual, his second Young Turks EP, an abstract and skeletal showcase for his fragile-sounding yet expressive voice. As he continued to work with fellow U.K. natives SBTRKT, Bullion, and FKA twigs, Sampha was also sought by more high-profile North American artists, and in 2016 alone appeared on Kanye West's The Life of Pablo, Frank Ocean's Endless, and Solange's A Seat at the Table. His own "Timmy's Prayer" (co-written by West) and "Blood on Me" were out by the end of the year as previews of his first full-length. Process, recorded while Sampha was grieving the death of his mother, and released in February 2017, hit number seven in the U.K. and narrowly missed the Top 50 in the U.S. Later in the year, Sampha made appearances on Drake's More Life and releases from Richard Russell's Everything Is Recorded project. Process went on to win the 2017 Mercury Prize, as well as Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards Album of the Year. Over the next few years, Sampha contributed in various capacities to recordings by Loyle Carner, Alicia Keys, Headie One and Fred again.., Actress, and many other artists across genres. An expanded "bonus edition" of Process, released in 2022, added two tracks previously available only in Japan.

I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Suspended
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
I was in and out, but drowning more and more
Then I find myself, all washed up by the shore
Artificial light, a glowing phone the source
It would wake me up, alarm with no remorse
Then I find this memory when we were high abroad
Round about the time that we were still unsure
Stoppin' on this photo, I really do j'adore
The vanilla skies, we step onto the moor
In Italy, in Florence where we walk
Where the sun it shines, a yellow tint we talk
Can we go back to how we were before?
But we're not where we used to be, of course
I lost the map but still we could explore
We're going up, we're wired to the force
A force we're on course, we're, of course, we're
Suspended
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Suspended
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Still a mystery the feelings I ignore
Like running from what I've been looking for
In-between the moments, each one like sliding doors
I was in and out, time don't make sense no more
In another life, we were two birds that soared
In another life, I don't know who you are
I'm a troubled mind, reality divorced
When you ask me if I love you, I'm
Suspended
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Suspended
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Suspended (suspended)
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Suspended (suspended)
I've been lifted by her love
I fell lifted from above
Time issue, time travel
Back, forward, back with you
Time issue, I miss you
Life, issues, time
"Suspended" by Sampha is a song that explores the idea of being lifted and suspended by love. The lyrics describe the feeling of being elevated and inspired by someone's love, as if floating above the ground. The repetition of the phrase "I've been lifted by her love, I fell lifted from above" emphasizes this sense of being elevated and supported by the love of another person.
The verses delve into the complexities of the relationship. The singer mentions being in and out, feeling both lost and found. The imagery of spilling wine and finding oneself washed up by the shore illustrates the ups and downs of the relationship. The glowing phone and the memories of being high abroad create a nostalgic and bittersweet atmosphere, hinting at a love that has changed over time. The desire to return to the past and recapture the connection is expressed through lines like "Can we go back to how we were before?" and "I lost the map but still we could explore."
The chorus reiterates the theme of being lifted by love, suggesting that despite the challenges and uncertainties, this love continues to elevate the singer. The song ends with a sense of longing and a question left unanswered when the lyrics say, "When you ask me if I love you, I'm..."
Overall, "Suspended" captures the feeling of being suspended in a state of emotional weightlessness, being lifted by the love of another person, while also reflecting on the complexities and struggles that can arise within a relationship.

My local record store had the gratitude of giving out the vinyl 2 days early. This song especially has been on repeat ever since and hits way too close to home, whole album was more than worth waiting for. Appreciate the work.
