Anthem
Samuel Joseph Kim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You think of speaking in new tongues
Do you have love
You think of running
You think of sacrificing to flames
And throw it away
You want to go out
You want to hear them
Call your name
You think I'm crazy
You think that maybe they were right
Am I crazy
If I jump, is it suicide
There's my father
Unafraid to touch the flames
There's my mother
Unafraid for her child
Are we crazy
Are we crazy
Am I crazy
Well, I'm going to jump and not come down
The lyrics of Samuel Joseph Kim's song "Anthem" touch upon themes of faith, questioning, and personal sacrifice. The song opens with the lines "You think of angels, you think of speaking in new tongues," which suggests a longing for spiritual experiences and a desire for a deeper connection with a higher power. The mention of love in the line "Do you have love" suggests that love and devotion are integral to the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
The lyrics then shift to themes of running, sacrificing to flames, and throwing things away, which can be interpreted as symbols of letting go of worldly attachments and desires in pursuit of a higher purpose. The desire to go out and hear one's name being called may symbolize a longing for recognition or affirmation from others, possibly in the context of a spiritual or religious community.
The chorus expresses a sense of self-doubt and questioning, as the singer wonders if they are perceived as crazy. The mention of jumping and suicide suggests a willingness to take risks or make sacrifices for something believed in wholeheartedly.
The final verse introduces the singer's parents as examples of fearlessness in facing challenges and danger. This can be seen as a way of emphasizing the importance of courage and faith in navigating life's difficulties.
Overall, "Anthem" explores themes of faith, sacrifice, and self-doubt, inviting the listener to reflect on their own beliefs and the lengths they are willing to go for what they hold dear.
