Legacy
Sanctus Real Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What will they say when I'm Gone, in words
That are written in stone?
Under my name, what will they claim
About me?

Oh, I want to leave a legacy to be remembered
More than just a memory that fades away
Because we only, we only get one life

Free me, my hands are tied
I'm so tired of wasting time
These endless inventions steal my
Attention from real life
And when it's done, when it's over

And will the world see Christ when they
Look at my life?
Oh, will they world see?

Mmm, come on, give me, give me, give me real life

And no more, no more, no more wasting time
Because we only, we only get one life

Who Can Know It?

There's a new song on all the CCM stations from Casting Crowns that includes the lyrics "I don't want to leave a legacy." The point of the song is to get across that we should be living our lives for God's glory and not our own. But straight up, the bigger impact you have (for Christ or for any purpose), the more you'll naturally be remembered. Nothing inherently good or bad about a legacy, and of course it's always good to have a legacy based on all you did to God's glory.

I just think of the day I stand before God and am asked to make an account of my life. Did I have a mediocre job I spent most of my waking hours at? Have some kids who I raised "good enough"? Give my leftovers to my family, my church, God himself? Did I trade the precious hours I was given on this video earth for a paycheck?

I say no. I DO want to leave a legacy, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
