How Deep Is The Ocean
Sandler and Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How much do I love you?
I'll tell you no lie
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How many times a day do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?
How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?

How high is the sky?
How high is the sky?

Overall Meaning

In this song, the singer is conveying their love for someone by using comparisons of vast and infinite things. By asking "How deep is the ocean?" and "How high is the sky?" the singer is essentially saying that their love knows no bounds or limits. They then continue to ask "How many times a day do I think of you?" and "How far would I travel to be where you are?" to emphasize how much this person means to them and the extent to which they would go to be with them. The final lines, "And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry? How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?" drive home the point that the singer's love is massive and losing this person would be an incredibly painful experience for them.

@epinephrine9429

@@Jojo01171 Sorry, but you’re wrong. Adam talked about it in great detail during an interview with Howard on December 3, 2019. He was asked by Stern how he met his wife and Adam explains that he was invited to a birthday party thrown for Stephen Dorff at a restaurant. He said Jackie was there with a bunch of her friends and that his friend, Dallas, knew her and introduced them to each other. They sat next to each other at the restaurant and talked for hours, about how she was from New York, too and how her family was from Florida and he also had found memories of being in Florida. After the party, she and her friends went back to his house, (where he lived with two other guys). They spent another few hours talking and getting to know each other. He goes on to say how, at one point, she was cold, so he got her a sweatshirt of his to wear and how sweet she thought that was and how when they were saying goodbye, they held each other’s hands for longer than a few seconds and after that, he couldn’t stop thinking about her. He called her the next day and the rest is history. Get a subscription to Sirius and listen to the interview yourself. He was there to promote Uncut Gems.
