Whispering Grass
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do you whisper, green grass,
Why tell the trees what ain't so?
Whispering grass,
The trees don't have to know.

Why tell them all your secrets,
Who kissed there long ago?
Whispering grass,
The trees don't need to know.

Don't you tell it to the breeze,
'Cause she will tell the birds and bees,
And everyone will know
Because you told them once before.

Yes you told them once before,
It's no secret anymore.
Why tell them all the old things,
They're buried under the snow.

Whispering grass, don't tell the trees,
'Cause the trees don't need to know.
Now don't you tell it to the breeze
'cause she will tell the birds and bees,

And everyone will know
Because you told them once before.
Yes you told them once before,
It's no secret anymore.

Why tell them all the old things,
They're buried under the snow.

Whispering grass, don't tell the trees,
'Cause the trees don't need to know.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sandy Denny's song Whispering Grass poetically convey the idea of discretion and the uselessness of sharing secrets from the past. The imagery of the green grass and trees serves as a metaphor for the passing of time and the idea that the past is best left buried. The first stanza asks why the grass is whispering and why it would tell the trees things that aren't true. The second stanza further explores the theme of secrets, questioning why the grass would share its secrets with others and warning against telling them to the breeze.

The chorus continues the idea that secrecy is best, reinforcing that the trees don't need to know and advising against sharing secrets because they have already been told before. The final stanza concludes with the idea that the past is best kept buried and hidden, as everything that has happened before is already covered under the snow.

Overall, the lyrics of Whispering Grass convey the message that sometimes secrets are best kept to oneself and that the past should be left in the past. The use of natural imagery serves to emphasize the idea that time passes and the secrets of the past will eventually be buried and forgotten.

I always thought of her as a folk singer. Now I know she can sing any style of music Wonderful voice.

electrickithara

I have this on vinyl and CD. She's one of the best singers I've ever heard.

Sandy Denny is brilliant on this song, lovely, sad and so sweet.

BIll G

She also recorded "Until the Real Thing Comes Along" with the same orchestration - wonderful piano, bass and guitar. I think that is the best version ever of that song. Those were the only two on her "Like an Old Fashioned Waltz" album with that orchestration.

I always picture a small stage in a little cabaret. Piano, drum and base and a singer in a green sparkling gown

WF

What I love about her version of this song is that I'm always left with a lingering sense that she is actually talking to grass (in a playful sort of Muppet Show way).

janetathensbay

My favourite version from a wonderful singer...Sandy, you left us sooooo young.

SeaBassVamp

Wonderful song, tuneful melody, supreme voice!

Poi Winn Song

I envision a 30's night club, small stage, arch and foliage, 3 musicians in tux's, and Sandy as the ingenue, hair up, green gown with a simple gold necklace.
