The band originally had ten pieces including congas, timbales, drums, two guitars and a four piece horn section. Sapo was formed just as Malo's song "Suavecito" hit the national top ten charts. Richard Bean, the singer and co-writer of the song, left Malo and formed Sapo with his brother horn player Joe Bean. Richard wrote Sapo's songs and was the lead singer and timbale player. The band rehearsed four hours a day, five or six days a week in a large garage on South Van Ness Ave. in SF's Mission District. They attracted manager Bill Dollar and soon landed a national record deal on Bell Records (which later became Arista). Despite excellent songs and musicianship, the resulting album was not able to match Malo's national success though it was a hit in the Latino community. Richard Bean still performs with Sapo and with Jorge Santana and other members of Malo. A few side notes: Sapo bass player, the late Jose Simon, went on to become a well-known San Francisco comedian. Dan Orsborn, one of the original guitarists and back-up singers, went on to write the score for Michael McClure's hit SF musical "Gorf" and the music for the cult classic United Artist's film "Smile" starring Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon and Melanie Griffith.

Hi, My name's Kincaid Miller, and the original keyboard player for Sapo. So here's a little trivia. First, you can probably buy the Record on Amazon or CD Baby. We rehearsed for 2 years before cutting the record. It was cut in just a few days as a live record, with just a few over dubs. In "Been Had", I put a harmony track over the original solo. (5th higher) to give it a fat unique sound. "Get it on) I used a Clavinett, which I'd never seen before. My favorite cut is "Sapo's Montuno". Thanks..

Hope life is treating you kind, your music is still being shared and enjoyed, thanks Kincaid Miller.

No matter how much, I hear, play, listen to this track, I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH!!!! GO SAPO GO!!! HOW CAN A BAND THIS GOOD ONLY MAKE ONE ALBUM?? A QUESTION I'LL PROBABLY TAKE TO THE GRAVE!!!

TheSmalltownclown - It’s because we were signed to “ Bell Records“, and Clive Davis bought it out, and change the name to Arista. Clive was just not into Latin Rock. He signed R&B acts like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
Plus, Sapo rehearsed for two years before recording that record. Everyone contributed to it and made up their own parts. I think my favorite cut is Sapo’s Montano. Hope that answers your question. Richard just did not have an R&B voice, and the band would have to be totally different. I would go on to do nothing but R&B and write other “rock” songs for one group or another. Also, a smooth jazz independent record release, which was top 10 nationally. And other records. I did two records for Jorge Santana, one for Mingo Lewis, and an EP for Marty Ballin plus my smooth jazz record. The band was called tell me tell me, and the name of the record is “Happens on Sunday“. You may still Be able to get it on Amazon, or some other site. I can say that that turned out very well. With a lot of attention from critics and radio stations across the country.

José Simone was a good friend of mine of course, and I let him stay in my apartment close to rehearsal studios for about six months. Raul Rekow was probably my best friend at the time, and through the years as well. What a great guy. So modest. Always had a smile on his face when he was playing, especially with Santana. Most Sincerely, Kincaid Miller. RIP Jose Simone & Raul Rekow. 🙏🙏🎶🎹🤘🌈😎.🎸🥁🤘
