Sara received her Bachelor of Science degree in History and English in 1994 from Evangel University, a private Christian university in Springfield, Missouri. Sara spent four years teaching high school in Rosemount, Minnesota before recording her first album, Past the Wishing, in 1998. Since then, she has released five more albums and appeared on several others (see below). Sara has been nominated for 3 Dove Awards including "New Artist of the Year" in 2002 and "Special Event Album of the Year 2003" by the Gospel Music Association. She was named one of the best Christian music artists of 2005 and the album, Add to the Beauty, was named "Album of the Year" for 2005 by CCM Magazine. In 2009 Fireflies & Songs earned enough votes from a panel of ten music critics to be named Christianity Today's Album of the Year. The magazine explained their choice: "Already known for her transparent songwriting, Sara Groves gets even more piercingly honest on this, her ninth album. Whether her relationship with God, marital tension, or a private battle with anxiety, it's poetically spilled forth in Groves' call for the church to 'live confessionally.' And paired with less poppy, stripped-down arrangements, her achingly clear vocal remains front and center. This is vintage Groves—yet more herself than ever."
To The Moon

We're leaving soon
After the bake sale to raise funds for fuel
The rocket is ready and we're going to
Take our church to the moon
There'll be no one there to tell us we're odd
No one to change our opinions of God
Here at our church on the moon
We know our liberties we know our rights
We know how to fight a very good fight
Just get that last bag there and turn out the light
We're taking our church to the moon
We're taking our church to the moon
We'll be leaving soon
The lyrics to "To The Moon" by Sara Groves share a story of a church community who has come together to fundraise for their rocket to take their church to the moon. The idea of taking a church to the moon symbolizes the desire to escape from the world's problems and judgment of society. The community is seeking to create a perfect world that will be free from any criticism, and they will be the only ones there to experience it. The lyrics indicate that the commitment to their faith is an intense one, and they want to be away from those who hold different opinions and beliefs.
The song creates a sense of hope and a belief that an ideal world is possible. The expectation of total freedom from criticisms and the desire to create a church community that exists in a space where they can only see the church members reflects an avoidance mechanism. This avoidance mechanism disguises the problem rather than solving it while presenting an idealistic perspective of creating a paradise for themselves. It highlights the importance of finding a destination that is void of ideas and peoples who differ from oneself to avoid conflict, projecting that the group's beliefs are the right ones, and that there is no need to interact with others.
