Chi Il Bel Sogno di Doretta
Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chi il bel sogno di Doretta
Poté indovinar?
Il suo mister come mai
Come mai finì

Ahimè, un giorno uno studente in bocca la baciò
E fu quel bacio rivelazione
Fu la passione

Folle amore
Folle ebbrezza
Chi la sottil carezza
D'un bacio così ardente
Mai ridir potrà?

Ah, mio sogno
Ah, mia vita

Che importa la ricchezza
Se al fine è rifiorita
La felicità

O sogno d'or
Poter amar così

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Brightman's song "Chi Il Bel Sogno di Doretta" tell the story of Doretta, who had a beautiful dream that someone guessed the mystery of. The song then goes on to ask why the dream ended, and the answer is revealed through a kiss from a student. The kiss was a revelation and was the beginning of a passionate and intense love affair. The lyrics describe the love as a crazy passion and an intense drunkness. The kissing and caressing were so intense that no one could ever repeat it.

Despite the richness that one may have, the lyrics then suggest that it is meaningless without happiness. The dream of having this incredible experience of love and passion is priceless and worth living for. The lyrics are beautiful and poetic, evoking the feeling of yearning for something beautiful and exhilarating, like the sensation of love and passion.

I love Sarah's version very much. No matter what how Opera Gurus would critical about it. She is not an Opera singer that's why I am really appreciated with all she's done with all those Operatic peaces! if you know what I mean.

Simply astounding vocal pitch, clarity; especially love the build to a crescendo from 2:00!

The first time I heard her sing it was on the album - The Songs that Got Away - A collection of broadway and opera songs . Ebay or Amazon should have it . I had to replace my cd of it and it took a little hunting down .... itunes might have it ....

Try this aria by Luba Orgonasova and see what you think of Ms Brightman's efforts. Luba is perfection and no warbling on the high notes and fudging the passagio.

Wonderful performance.  Sarah has such great range.

@ravenboytx I can't fathom being in your despicable position. To lose your ability to hear high notes just as you're about to listen to one of the world's greatest sopranos sing this amazing song. Well, let me just tell you, they were gorgeously resonant. And the way she lilted up to them without so much as a hint of screeching-- real skill.

This was recorded for her album "The Songs that got away" released in the late 1980s. Her voice was still very young here, which I personally love, as it still sounds fresh and incredibly light and ice-cold.

That declined rapidly once she started to think it was a good idea to sound "opera" like by darkening her voice and using an odd technique. She should have stayed with her natural timbre, displayed here, and developed it. Could have been great.

Her diction was and still is dreadful. Back then and now. It drives me mad when she sings in Italian. :D
